EWS Ring Antenna - Dare I Ask?

    Yes, I found the Threadfest. OMG, there's like 212 pages of posts to read through. I gave up about page 9.

    So here's my question that I have. I got a new spare EWS Ring to carry on my 06 GS12 after reading all the horror stories and just got it a few days ago. I see its held on by two Phillips head screws. If the EWS fails, is its a simple matter of just removing the old unit, plugging in the new and turning on the key?

    Any other steps required for a field replacement?

    Thanks for NOT making me read the whole 3,000 or more posts.....:D

    I'd look closely at those screws,they are likely security screws rather than phillips.
    From past reports they can be drilled out and replaced with allen or torx,then the antenna swap is easy.

    Otherwise you remove the wiring connector to the existing antenna ring using a T-10 torx to get the cover off and connect to your spare antenna with your spare key wired or taped inside the new antenna(the emergency plastic key works too).
    Secure the whole assembly near your ignition switch,switch on your key in the ignition switch and off you go.
    Newest part number for antenna ends in -247 and is now around $35-40,used to cost >$100!

    +1. But make sure your spare's part number ends with a "-247" suffix. To my knowledge, this is the only version that has proven solidly reliable so far.

    This method works as a field replacement. Obviously, if you want to permanently replace it, you need to drill out the security bolts, which I understand is a bitch.

    OK guy, thanks so far! Now if I can prevail upon you a bit more....

    I have the -247 spare, so thats all good. I went out and took the cover off (attached with the small TORX), but don't see any security screws or otherwise a way to remove the ring from the ignition switch. Does a permanent fix involve removing the handlebars and triple clamps to get to it?

    Also, you don't need to tape or attach to spare ring unless you plan on turning off and on the bike a lot. The ring antenna only affects starting the bike. You can plug in the good RA and with extra key held nearby - start the bike and unplug the RA and put it safely in your pocket. It's not needed to keep the bike running.

    Remove handlebars and top fork bridge. The bottom side of the fork bridge looks like this:

    The security screws are labelled #1. Doesn't look that hard to do (but I've never done it and things I've never done always look easy :lol2)
