I had the joy of living in Kailua from 1972-1974 as a kid, went to Aikahi Elementary school, loved being there!

I went to Aikahi in the 70’s too! You’re probably a couple years older though.

I had Mrs Ono about the same grade, few years later. Mrs. Radcliffe, Kobayashi... I remember them all.

I need to find where I can get fresh manapua from. Is it considered a bakery food?

I'll get to reply to the other posts tomorrow.

Ate dinner on Kailua beach this evening.

Forty six years later, I happen upon someone on an online forum who had my same teachers at the same school, that's just cool !!

    IKR?!

I was there from 0-15 years, so a bit longer than you, but being in Hawaii during the 70-80's was THE best time. Only after I left did traffic, crime and other things start going downhill. I still have friends there and an Aunt on the Big Island. I go back every now & then, despite the distance and cost. I was in Kailua last year. I'm glad I didn't wait until this summer! Somewhere in this thread is the hotel my Dad worked at near Waikiki. Such memories...

Once this pandemic is over I'll see if I can get it. Thank you.

Bellows was open 7 days a week apart from the beach is used for amphibious landings. It has been shut since the pandemic. On Sunday I tried to get in and there were signs for both the military and private side were shut. The website hasn't been updated and as of June 1st it should be reopened. I will go there soon

That's literally right next to where I bank at Navy Federal. Next to the Aikahi mall area. A lovely area to go to school. A world away from where I went to school. I'll get pics for you next time I am there.

At Ka'ena Point. Silence other than the constant waves crashing.

I've been to Hanauma Bay briefly, by the time I got in the water it was closing time. Lots of lovely ferral cats there.

Enjoying the thread. If you get the chance, check out some of the coadt artillery sites throughout the hills, and try to sneak onto the Haiku Trail. Heard it's pretty closed up now, but there are ways to get in. My son did it 10 years ago. See if you can get a tour of the Red Hil tunnels.

You can still get on the Haiku Trail. It's practically across the street. There's a security guard posted at the entrance. There's a way round it and I've been told the guards don't care. I've not been up there. Apparently there is a back way that's a lot longer.

I can see part of the stairs riding home. The entrance goes right below the H3 interstate. If you have seen the Netflix movie triple frontier the highway and H3 tunnel can be seen.

    These are not my pics:

    At 45 seconds.

The haiku stairs I believe built by the Air Force to lay cables from the Kaneohe Omega Station up the mountain. Before gps was used by the military the Navy used some kind of global radio system having Omega stations places around the globe.

I would like to go for a tour of Red Hill, not sure if they do them or still do. I hear it's the largest underground fuel storage facility in the world.
