Been to Matsumoto's lately? When I was there it was just a shack. Holes in the walls and roof. Dirt road with horse hitching post in front.
Down the road across the from the beach where we used to surf was a small place called Chun's Reef. A burger and a coke for 25 cents.
When we needed money we would go to the marina in Haliewa and dive for stuff that people dropped from their boats.
Good times, but that was long ago and far away.

Post script- back then there was no "road" to Kaena point. It was a rough dirt trail that changed constantly. I used to ride my 60's era Yamaha 80cc dirt bike out there. It was a dirt bike because it had knobbies

I've not been to matsumotos. It looks like a shaved ice place. The road to the end of ka ena point is still a dirt road that requires a key code which I have. Or do you mean the tarmac road towards the gate?

First 2 pics are near Ka'a'awa beach. There are some interesting settlements deep in land.

These other pics are Ka'ena point from this weekend.

I picked up the Magnum P.I. entire back catalog. Currently on the pilot episode, most people don't know this but the first 11 episodes had a totally different theme song to what everyone commonly knows as the Magnum theme.

There's a lot of places that I recognize that were filmed 40 years ago. The Pali highway, Koko head, Waikiki, Ali Wai Harbor. I used to watch Magnum when I was like 5 growing up in England. I never thought I'd be here, I'm so grateful to my parents and wish they were alive today to experience what they gave me.

I remember going to a play at some theater in Manoa when I was a kid and John Hillerman (Higgins) was in the audience. The Pali Hwy is my favorite "road" in the world. And those tunnels. My father worked at the Ilikai hotel off the Ali Wai Harbor and I spent much time there. 'Great memories. It's not quite the same now.

Progress seemed to has stopped at Robin's Nest. I cannot believe they tore down the wall and just left the remains of it just lying on the floor like it was insignificant.

Waimanalo is one of my favorite areas, shame it's run down. It's still a beautiful place.

This is from season 1 of Magnum, Robin Masters Audi 4000 does a parking brake into this outlook. This is on Diamond Head Road next to Diamond Head beach park. That tree is still there.

Finally visited the Pali Gap. It was closed but you can still walk in.

I love the Hawaii Kai area and Diamond Head albeit being densely populated. My wife and I went back down and had lunch on Diamond Head beach. It's not a swimming beach as such due to rock, it's more of a launch point for surfers. It's a wonderful place. I drove over to Waianae to sell some car tires. I was in the ghetto and even the ghetto was nice. The people I sold the tires to, poor they were, but gracious, proud and polite. They reinforced what I've already been told about Waianae. They said it's beautiful but keep driving and don't get out to walk. Apparently punks are robbing people more during the pandemic.

Those jelly filled things look so good from a no sugar and no carbs diet perspective!

Beautiful scenery. Almost makes me want to go but too many people is my biggest turn off.

The Leonard’s malasada truck in Hawaii Kai brings back great memories.

...also the only place you will probably ever see a waterfront Costco.

That's chocolate filling. At the leonards shop you can get them with portuguese sausage filling. The biggest turn off for me is the one party Communist system that are running the state into the ground and the cost of living.

I'd didn't notice there was a Costco there, Walgreens is right next to it.

It's on Keahole St. across the marina from the plaza where the Leonard's truck is parked, you can see it looking out from the Kona Brewing patio. Costco is (was) a great place to grab a snack, the view is incredible....mountains in one direction, the blue water marina in the other.

There's also a great hike at the Kuliouou Reservoir maybe five minutes from there, views of KokoHead and Hawaii Kai are incredible from the ridge.

Thanks for sharing. Such a great place! In ignorance, when we think Hawaii we think big waves like Sunset, Wiamea Bay, the Pipe....so it's kinda funny to see beaches with knee high waves. ( not that I have the balls to even paddle out in those breaks! )

Thanks for helping to bring back great memories. When the kids were small, camping at Bellows was a treat. (As was Malaekahana). Unfortunately, our last trip to Malaekahana was very disappointing, as it seems most of the beach has since washed away.

    Mahalos plenty!
