Under warranty they finally replaced the fuel pump, fuel pump electronics and injectors.

That sounds like it is most likely the fuel pressure sensor failing. It is located at the end of the fuel rail on the left side.

You can unplug the fuel pressure sensor and the bike will run but be difficult to start the first time as it takes the bike a while to determine this sensor is unplugged.

If the problem goes away and stays away, that was it.

If the problem gets worse, the impeller on the fuel pump is slipping on the motor shaft when it gets hot. This type of fuel pump failure is rare but does occur.

It is 99% certain that it is one of those two componants failing and NOT the ECU (DME), or fuel pump electronics as neither of those respond primarily to fuel temperature which it certainly sounds like what your bike is doing.

Hey Joel!

Not sure if you saw the appends, but one guy has used an Opel fuel pump with some success,
he reported a crappy idle, but it might have been due to substandard pump.
He said it was a match in terms of size & connections - it was sourced as an:
Opel Tigra Vectra B Zafira 99-05 FUEL PUMP OPEL 815037
Available on eBay but otherwise hard to come by in USA since Opel is no longer imported...

There's another pump out there also that is asserted to work ok:

You have not broken back in to Gateway BMW to retrieve your personal possessions from your desk yet have you?

Until I read your append I would not have put the pressure sensor unit on my short list of suspects ... thanks! :clap

I do recall your advice that the only two sensors that are absolutely required for operation are the TPS & Crank position sensor ... My fallback plan if drunk or stupid and stuck out-back, is to unplug everything but them and see what happens next ... :lol3

Bingo.

It was the fuel pressure sensor. I unplugged it from behind the right side fairing and put in 100 miles without a hiccup. Thanks for being such a great resource. :D

Hi everyone - it's Bobby Cleveland. Many of you know me as the Engine Answerman. I've been reading some of your posts regarding STA-BIL causing engine problems and damage and wanted to clear those concerns up for you. STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer is extremely effective at protecting fresh fuel. If fuel is already deteriorated, it cannot reverse this effect.

Another cause of your engine or carburetor getting gummed up is when an engine has not been well cared for and then STA-BIL Brand Fuel Stabilizer is added. The cleaner in the product cleans deposits off of the fuel system surfaces, but this debris is too large to run through the carburetor. A severely dirty fuel system should always be cleaned with a strong dosage of a top rated fuel system cleaner in any case as this will improve performance and fuel economy. It will also help you avoid the carburetor plugging problem.

Here's a great video with information on how to properly store all of your gas-powered equipment and vehicles, along with the importance of including STA-BIL Brand Fuel Stabilizer in the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OJ8Mr8KVzc&feature=plcp. If you have more questions, feel free to post them here, and I’ll respond directly. You’re also welcome to contact Gold Eagle Co.’s customer service at 1-800-367-3245.

My two cents and experience on touring the world with a f800gs.
before leaving my Yukon hometown, i put both brand new sprockets, and the best DYD X-ring chain. I had done more than 20 000km with the first kit.
It lasted a little more than 6000km. I had to stop in bmw culiacan in mexico. Both sprockets were really eaten, rear one being worse. The chain was slapping so bad I couldn't even ear the engine. Im taking good care of it, checking the adjustment often, cleaning it and lubing it every other day. Even though im carying a 70 pounds moto-mule, I strongly doubt it has anything to do with it.
Despite my preparation, having called them to make sure they had everything in stock, turned out they had only the 16-48 combo (witch is for the 650 ?). Since I'm doing offroad and small, tight city streets, heavy latino traffic, etc, I knew it wasn't a good choice to go with such a ratio. But i didnt have any choice cauz I was expecting the chain to break soon.
The manager told me Id have better fuel mileage but its not the case since i rarely get over 4th gear anyways.
So now, after not even an other 10 000km my chain is stretching not evenly... again.
sprockets look still good. Can it be something else? Someone told me it couls be the alignment? ! I dont know what that means and wats implied. ..
So there's that fun guy I met in Guatemala who offered me two brand new chains... for free.
they are 520 doh... can I put it on the f8gs? I could put a 15t front sprocket and gain back a bit of low speed torque.
what you guys think?

You need to get a 525 chain since sprocket thickness changes with chain strength:

Approx Width between inner plates--
520: 1/4"
525: 5/16"
530: 3/8"

I run top of the line DID - x ring chains on all my bikes.
I got 40,000 miles with my Scotts oiler on my F800GS.
I can get as little as 3,000 miles on my dirt bikes when running in sandy or muddy conditions. Typical F800GS rider should get between 10,000 and 20,000 miles out of a good chain.

I guess my story is pretty typical so far. I have a 2010, it's my only vehicle so I ride year round, have nearly 80,000km/50,000 miles on it.

So far the only real problem has been the steering head bearings (3 sets - one set only lasted 10,000km/6500 miles).

I've just done the reg/rec & stator, but I was expecting that. Everything else has just been standard consumables.

Still runs great (except for needing a second to warm up), looking forward to many more miles. :clap

Thanks for your answer. I'll then try to exchange both 520 for he right one.
ever heard of misalignment of the sprokets? I haven't, but since it comes from a dealer, I'm still wondering what's that about...
do you think i can put the smaller front sprocket with the new chain without problem with my rear spocket ? I dont feel like changing it if it's still okay, but im really fed up with this 16-48 ratio, being always on the clutch aint fun..
also, would going with a chain intended for something bigger as a ATV chain be a good choice?
thanks

what kind of normal DID chain with X seals + sprockets lasts only 6k kms, especially if you clean and lube it regulary. and that it was so bad that it slapped louder than the engine sound, again after only 6k kms.

The stock gearing for the F800gs is 16/42 and the F650gs is 17/41. 16/48 has lowered the gearing about 13%. That means for the same speed, the engine is turning 13% higher rpm.in 6th. It will be more so in the lower transmission gears, because they change ratio's as you go through them.

A 1 tooth change in the front sprocket is about 6+%. You would have to go up 2 teeth just to equal stock gearing. It may be too large to fit.

48 teeth is not one offered by BMW. It is aftermarket. If it is, there is a good chance the front is too. The 2009 F800 rear sprocket uses 8mm bolts, all the later years use 10mm. Since the bolts are held with nuts, its possible some nut tightened your old bolts just to get it on. 2mm larger holes in the sprocket, would allow the sprocket to move. They are one time use bolts by the way.

The stock front sprocket has flange on both sides, one thicker than the other. If not installed correctly, the two sprockets won't be in alignment. A lot of aftermarket sprockets don't have either one, so they don't fit correctly. That should be visible on the sprockets, as they will have wear patterns on one side of the teeth or the other. From memory the thicker side fits towards the engine.

Unless you are absolutely sure you have the correct sprockets, get yourself some new sprockets, either BMW or some quality replacement that knows 2009 model rear sprockets are different.

Just a side note to prove aftermarket suppliers don't always know what they sell. I bought a 15 tooth as cast sprocket for the front from Touratech. It was too tight to fit without a hammer. It was for an Aprilia, and they thought they were interchangeable. Similar with Bike bandit trying sell me a rear sprocket for my KlX650 dual sport, not knowing the dirt and dual versions had different hole patterns.

It pays to know little bit about your bike before taking an out of Country trip.

I'm sorry you're totally right about the sprockets. Im on 17-41 instead of 16-42.
I still have a 16t stock sprocket. Do you think it would really kill a chain to swap it to gain a bit more power on low gear? I'm really fed up of being on the clutch all the time. In central american traffic, the slowest I can go without touching the clutch is around 20-25kph...
If not I'll swap the complete set for new stock and keep this one as a spare or to ride back up on the highway.

You have the F650 twin sprockets. No problem with switching front sprockets. Switching front only, will result in gearing slightly taller than a F800.

Does it have a rear sprocket meant for the 2009 models? The issue is, if you put a 8mm bolt through a 10mm hole, the sprocket will rotate when you accelerate and slow down, causing the teeth not to align properly with the chain and cause wear.

I don't know whether the F650gs twin ever had a rear sprocket with 8mm bolts to hold it on. If they did and you have one, no problem. If your rear sprocket is held with 10mm bolts, no problem. Not hard to figure out nor difficult to fix if is a later model sprocket. Take one of sprocket bolts off and see if is too small for sprocket hole. If it is, you can drill the holes in the hub to fit 10mm bolts.

I was the same bolts size than the stock one that was on the bike. No problem with that I guess. Rear sprocket was fitting snugly as well. It makes me wonder doh; Can it be related to the cush blocs inside the hub ? I noticed they look pretty worn out, splitted in two parts (the little tab holding the pairs is broken). It didn't look as it was making any difference so I left it like that, but now... ?
Thanks a lot for your input, btw. Its appreciated.
