We stayed here at the Prairie Inn and had breakfast next door at Casey's Depot. Next door to that was a gas station where we fueled up and met this man. He was from Switzerland and was riding his bicycle across the US. He started in NYC. His favorite part of the journey was the plains of Oklahoma. Being from Switzerland he had never seen anything so flat. I would have liked to talk to him longer but he was ready to get on the road and so were we.

At this point we were south of the TAT still routing around the mudslide. We rode west for awhile then turned north heading towards Featherville where we would reconnect with the TAT. P6230692.JPG P6230696.JPG P6230707.JPG P6230711.JPG

Around mid morning something pretty cool happened. We came up on a sheep drive! We pulled over and watched for about 15 minutes as hundreds of sheep ran by. I kept thinking that one of the dogs was going to bite me on the leg as they ran by but they didn't.

We were back on the TAT now.

Thanks! Part of the reason I haven't updated this is because the computer with all of these pictures has been in storage for a while. It's nice to look back on them and relive the trip.

We rode for a few more hours after lunch and made it to Oregon. We stayed at the Country Campground that night in Ontario.

We left camp and went in to town for breakfast. The theme for today was old cars. There was a nice Model A Ford coupe on a trailer parked outside of the restaurant. We had a good breakfast then rode back over to Idaho to get back on the trail.

I spotted an old Willys Overland wagon on the side of the road. My dad had one just like it when I was a kid. Same color even. His was a 1956. I'm not sure what year this one is.

Old school bus in the water. I did a little research on this to see what the story was but I couldn't find anything.

After riding for a couple of hours I realized that I probably should have gotten gas this morning. When my gas light came on at 239 miles I started looking at the GPS for gas stations. There was nothing close. We decided to leave the TAT and follow the GPS route to the nearest gas station.

    P6240881.JPG

I don't remember how many miles away the gas station was now, but I think it took us at least two hours to get there. I ran out gas at around 280 miles and had to use my MSR reserve bottle. Soon I ran out again and had to use my dad's reserve bottle. The next option would have been to suck some gas out of the KLR's 6 gallon tank. Luckily it didn't come to that. I was able to shut the bike off and coast down a mountain for several miles which is probably the only reason I made it to the gas station. Lesson learned. Fill up every morning!

    P6240883.JPG P6240884.JPG

This is where we found gas. The Burnt River Market in Unity, OR. We had lunch here and looked over the maps. We needed to make up some time and decided to ride west on 26 for the rest of the day.

Nice, just what the doctor ordered--some TAT photos. That is a nice thing about riding with a KLR alongside, the supertanker is always available with a standard gravity fed gas line ready for fillups!

We rode past John Day where the BMW rally happened to be going on that week. We knew that we wouldn't be able to find any lodging so we carried on.

    P6240893.JPG P6240895.JPG

We stopped at this general store for a break. They had a Model T Ford outside on display.

We rolled into Mitchell where the only lodging available was at the park. It was primitive but there was a public bathroom across the street.

We set up camp and walked over to the bar for dinner and a few beers.

    P6240904.JPG

As we were sitting there a young guy approached us. He was traveling and was looking for gas. The local gas station had already closed for the day and he was afraid that he didn't have enough to make it to the next town. Like me he didn't realize how remote this area was. He decided to try to push on and we wished him good luck.

A couple of minutes passed and we heard a crash. The poor guy got in his truck and backed in into a Harley knocking it over. He knew that we were traveling on bikes and he walked over to ask us what he should do. He asked if he should try to pick it up. We told him that he should probably try to find the owner first. He eventually found the guy and helped him lift the bike. I think the only damage was a broken marker light. The owner of the Harley was a nice guy and didn't make a big deal about it.

    P6240906.JPG

    That's all for today.

    200 miles

The next morning we continued west on 26 to Prineville where we gassed up before rejoining the TAT.

The trail turned to red dirt and took us into a beautiful forest. This is what I had imagined the TAT would look like in Oregon. Up until now it had looked more like Utah.
