I really enjoyed this stretch. Riding in the forest is my favorite type of riding.

The trail turned to pavement near the Paulina Lake Lodge where we stopped for an ice cream.

We decided to stop for the day at the West View Motel in Prineville. There was an evening thunderstorm that cleared up right at sunset making for a spectacular sky!

I forgot to reset the odo on the gps this morning so ignore the 457 miles. It should say 200 miles.

Snow! Not a good sign when you are climbing.

We kept hitting patches of snow as we continued on. I eventually got stuck on this big pile. I could have easily pushed the WR over this and continued on, but decided to just leave it and walk ahead to scout out the road. After walking for only a few minutes I came to about two feet of snow completely covering the road. Time to turn around. The mosquito's were freaking huge here! We jumped on the bikes and got out of there before they carried us away.

We got back to the bottom and looked at the map. We had planned to detour to Crater Lake and we were getting close so we just decided to head there. There was plenty of snow along the way. I think temps were in the high 50's.

What an amazing site! The snow made it even better. I think we were there at the perfect time of year. The TAT does not take you to Crater Lake but I highly recommend taking the short detour to see it.

We hung around at the lake for a couple hours checking out the gift shop and taking in the view. We might have had lunch here. Don't remember now. We never made it back to the TAT today. We would pick it up again tomorrow a little further south where it hopefully would not be snowed in. We ended up in Shady Cove at the Royal Coachman Motel for the night. Cool place right on a river. We had dinner next door at a 50's style diner. Our waitress was funny. She offered to take our picture. She took my phone and said "I'll only take your picture if we get to be in it to!" Great food, and a damn good bloody mary!

The last day! We headed west to pick up the trail. The GPS track didn't really match the road. At times it was hard to tell if we were going the right way. We eventually came to a locked gate and had to turn around. I'm not sure that Sam even rode these new Oregon tracks. It seems like he might have just mapped them out on the computer. There were a lot of routing issues in this area. We had to do a huge reroute to get back on the trail. I talked to other people later on that had the same issues. The parts of the TAT in this area that we did get to ride were beautiful though.

After the reroute I don't think we had any other issues. Iv'e read a lot of ride reports of large trees down in this area blocking the trail. We got lucky and didn't have to deal with that. There were a few tress down here and there but nothing that we couldn't get around.

After a few hours of riding these beautiful forest roads we suddenly found ourselves back on black top and in Port Orford. We stopped for a quick pic by this sign, then headed towards the water.

I got off the bike to take a picture but the kick stand obviously wouldn't work in the sand so I just set the bike down. It deserved some rest anyway!

After the bikes were done napping we picked them up and rode them back up to the parking lot. We hung out here for a while enjoying the view and taking pictures. Next we rode to town for a celebration beer!

It was strange, but it was time for us to part ways. We both had to get home and get back to work. Dad decided to get a room for the night and would start his ride back to New Mexico in the morning. I was to head north to Springfield, OR to stay with my cousin and his family for the night. I had a three hour ride to Springfield so we said our goodbyes and I hit the 101.

I made it to my cousins house that evening. I would stay the night with them and then start heading back east the next day. I didn't want to ride all the way back to Ohio and didn't have enough time anyway. The plan was to ride to Custer, SD where I would meet my wife and kids and my mom. We would haul the bike home from there.

My cousin Justin, His wife Paige and their daughter Ada.

It was great to see them and catch up. I wished I could have stayed longer but I had 1300 miles to cover in the next few days.

I stopped in Bend, OR to have lunch and to spray all of the salt and sand off the bike. I also stopped at a Honda dealer to buy a cramp buster to help my hand with the long ride ahead of me. There was a new Africa Twin sitting there that was looking pretty tempting at the moment. I decided to hit the road before a salesman spotted me drooling.

    P6281306.JPG P6281311.JPG P6281326.JPG

I made it almost to the Idaho border where I ended up stopping for the night at the same campground that we stayed in our first night in OR.

The next morning I made coffee and oatmeal on the jetboil then hit the highway. Literally! I rode interstate from Ontario, OR to Mountain Home, ID where I picked up Highway 20.

    P6291340.JPG

80 mph? I'll do my best lol. Maybe I should have bought that Africa Twin...

    P6291341.JPG

This is US 20. It will take me almost all the way to Custer, SD. Fun fact: US Highway 20 is the longest road in the United States. It runs from Boston, MA to Newport, OR.

    P6291344.JPG

The TAT intersects 20 several times so I passed a lot of familiar sites like the Prairie Inn where we stayed in Fairfield.

    P6291359.JPG
I stopped at the Crater's of the Moon visitor's center to stretch my legs. Apparently I didn't take any pictures here.

Blasting back past Arco and the submarine.

    P6291388.JPG

Between Arco and Idaho Falls I spotted this guy broke down on the side of the road. I stopped to ask if he needed anything but he was good. He and a couple of other guys were on a trip and his throttle cable broke. Luckily it was the last day of their trip. His buddies rode on to Idaho Falls to get their truck and trailer. He needed to do some electrical work on the bike so he decided to start on it while he was waiting.

    P6291390.JPG

I had planned to camp again tonight but it was supposed to drop below freezing after sun down. I would be warm in my sleeping bag, but didn't feel like packing up in the cold the next morning so I got a room in Idaho Falls.
