glad you enjoyed the pics. It is possible we crossed paths. We saw hundreds of bikes and riders on the trip. We left Calgary on July 25th and bee lined it to Watson Lake, afterwhich we slowed down the pace and wandered around for two weeks. We were in Tombstone July 30-Aug 1 and in Dawson for the next two days. We met Big Dick, the fellow who organizes the D2D and had a good chat. Dick is a great fellow to know as he has a garage with tire changing equipment as well as an assortment of spare tires for those unfortunate enough to need them. We "donated" our spare tires (used sets of Heidenau's to fit a WeeStrom and a KTM 990 Adv) which we took along for the Dempster but thankfully didn't need. We left them with Dick and would encourage anyone interested in loaner tires to check with him before dragging your spares all the way from home (wherever that may be).

Here are a few more photos from the trip.

Don't want to test them on this one

Time to dust off this thread and find out where everyone went this year in Western Canada. So post up your favourite photo(s) from the year. I did a separate thread of my year, but thought it would be great to see some of the places others have been so I (and perhaps others) can get some ideas for 2014.

My favourite place this year was Tombstone Territorial Park in the Yukon, 75 kms up the Dempster. My buddy and I had planned on going up the Dempster to at least the Arctic Circle but somehow got stuck at Tombstone. I know I posted some of these in other threads, but here are photos exclusively from our time in and around Tombstone. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Tombstone Territorial Park Information Centre - very helpful people

A short hike up the north fork of the Klondike River brought us to snow in the valley bottom. This was July 30!

It was an easy hike on the valley floor with amazing views all around

Day 2 - we went on what was billed as a moderate hike, but we made it a bit more strenuous by climbing Goldensides Mountain to a scree slope just below the summit. The mountain is called goldensides because by mid-August the bushes covering it have turned amazing colours. Google Tombstone Territorial Park and you will see what I mean.

You can see the Information Centre and the campground on the valley floor on the right side of the photo

This photo looks up the north fork of the Klondike River. You can again see the Information Centre and the campground as well as the patch of snow in the bottom of the valley we hiked to the previous day

You are so far north that the sun doesn't set until almost midnight at the end of July

Day 3 - we did a long hike part way up the Grizzly Creek trail. This is a popular backpack trail for those with the time and gear. Since we didn't have either we just went in to the highest point on the trail and, after hanging around for a bit, turned around and descended back to the bikes. The views from near the top of Goldensides were great; the views on the Grizzly Creek trail were spectacular

You can see the road in the valley bottom. That is where we parked the bikes to start the hike

I can only say that anyone who is planning a trip to the Yukon and enjoys hiking and camping should spend a few days in Tombstone.

I was surprized to see the Cat Boat at Atlin, but then again, it is a big lake. Where do you sail your Cat Boat in Alberta?

Fatallybitten, Thanks for sharing your Yukon photos, they are making me drool for the north! Tombstone park is gorgeous! If you go back, at least go as far as the Richardson Mountains, just past the Arctic Circle! I'm glad you got into some hiking, that's something I didn't give myself time to do on my trip, regrettably...

I'd like to return some day, perhaps once the summer road is done between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk! I think I would take the Robert Campbell highway to Carmacks next time as well, instead of going through Whitehorse, for a change of scenery.

Tropic of Canada, we had originally planned on taking the Campbell Highway, as well as doing both the Canol North and South roads, but the combination of road closures, fires and gas station closures caused us to revise the plan on the fly. It also gives me a reason to return. I especially want to revisit Tombstone when it is in its fall colours. And, as you say, the Richardson Mountains are worth putting the miles on the bike. I also need to do the entire Top of the World route instead of just an out and back day trip from Dawson. So much more to see; just have to go back. Cheers, David
