Sunday morning. Windy and cold; plugged in...again.

    This is "Darby's View":

Although this photo was taken in southwest Virginia, much of what you see above is northwest North Carolina, including Pilot Mountain in the distance.

Late in the day I found myself back in the mountains at Meadows of Dan. Cruising north from there I saw a big rig nosed up to the Parkway on Conners Grove Road, four-ways flashing. Your basic predicament; I shoulda got a photo.

I rolled up to the cab to see if I could offer a way out. The driver powered down his window and asked if I was local.

    Yep.

    "Oh, thank God!"

Allen, his lady-friend and their small dog had just driven all the way from California's Central Valley, and had a delivery for Chateau Morissette. They had last been in Floyd, but their GPS gave them a bum instruction and routed them down one of the gnarliest, twistiest roads around, right past the base of Buffalo Mountain, and deposited them here.

There was absolutely no place to turn around (and they really didn't want to go back the way they just came anyway), and commercial vehicles aren't allowed on the Parkway.

Their delivery to the winery wasn't until the following morning, however, and at this point they were simply looking for a safe place to deadhead for the night, preferably somewhere where they could grab supper.

Dazed and confused, they were. Easy to get that way up here in the mountains if you don't know your way around.

After some friendly discussion, I ended up escorting them into Meadows of Dan via Woodberry and Willis Road. This required traversing a couple hundred yards of Parkway to make the turn onto Woodberry, but considering the circumstances, a Park Ranger (if one even happened to happen along) would've certainly cut them some slack.

They followed me to Meadows of Dan, we secured permission for them to spend the night behind the gas station, and although it was getting late-ish, the restaurant across the street was still open. Score.

Allen calls South Carolina home, but has traveled the country extensively in his rig, and loves the adventure of it all. He coulda easily been bummed about what just happened, all the time, effort, drama and stress, but took it all in stride and pretty much said it comes with the territory. Glass half full.

He was VERY thankful that a good samaritan stopped and helped put a nice exclamation point on the end of their day.

Here's Allen and his big rig in Meadows of Dan...

...and after I took this photo he reached in the cab, walked over with a big grin, shook my hand, thanked me yet again for the expert escort, and gifted me this brandy-new Indian River Transport hat:

When it was all said and done I logged about 600 miles this weekend.

And everywhere I turned was another ADVenture waiting to unfold.

    More, please.

I have never visited Friendship speedway but have threatened to go many times. Maybe this summer I will follow through with my threats. I've been to Bowman Grey stadium in Winston Salem and it was mostly boring. Way too many cars on a 1/4 mile flat asphault track. After a few laps it began too look like a model train where the train was almost as long as the track.

While I have never been to Friendship speedway, I understand that the likelyhood of a post-race fight between drivers is second only to a hockey match. I have some old friends who used to race there but I don't know if they still do.

Pretty cheap entertainment, and it doesn't get much more red, white and blue.

By the way: As I was buying my ticket I asked the gal if they had beer for sale; a cold brewsky sounded pretty good at this point. "No, but you're welcome to bring in your own" she replied with a grin. Wayle, I wasn't packing, but I'll certainly remember for next time. :D

I ran up to my local post office early this afternoon to mail off a package. I decided to take the long way home.

Several hours later I found myself gazing at the grandeur that is Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina:

The sky had turned rather scuddy since leaving Virginia, and this side of Grandfather really deserves early-morning light to do it justice. It was pushing 5 o'clock by this point, however, so late-afternoon lighting from the wrong direction it is.

    This is the other side:

Still not a trophy photo, but at least the lighting is pointed the right direction this time. Spring has barely begun its transformation up here at altitude.

I've never been much for photographing my food on the road, but hey, that's what we're supposed to do on ADVrider, so here's supper in Boone this evening:

Don't laugh, all 27 major food groups are represented here! :D

I turned an 8-mile round-trip to the post office this afternoon into a very satisfying 245-mile early spring ride, and pretty much had the Parkway to myself in the process.

    More, please.

What's the weather like up there in May around Memorial Day? I need a reset terribly, and I'm thinking of a solo BRP journey. #1 I've never ridden past Little Switzerland, and #2 I've never taken a solo, multi-day motorcycle ride.

Typically nice. Can be muggy by then, but it's all relative: one man's muggy is another man's "ahhhhhhhh!" First holiday of the season so it'll be a little busy up here, but that's all relative, too. That said, making reservations in advance is recommended.

There's nice, motorcycle-friendly lodging at Little Switzerland; Diamondback Lodge: https://www.switzerlandinn.com/rooms/diamondback/

Freebornes, at Laurel Springs, NC offers motorcycle-friendly lodging, with on-site restaurant, bar, store, and will for sure have live music on Mem. Day Weekend: https://www.facebook.com/Freebornes

How far up the Parkway do you think you'll get?

Was thinking about taking Tuesday-Friday off the week of Memorial Day to ride. Just pack light, and see where I end up.

Might see you up there. My daughter and I are planning a Sat-Wed trip along the Parkway the week prior to Memorial Day, weather permitting.

In the late 90's, I lived in Christiansburg,VA.while enlarging the dorms at Blacksburg.
I operated large crane, and was offered a job constructing the winery-(erecting the huge timberframe
in view of the parkway) in Floyd,VA.
wow, that was a great part of my life. even if i drove 45 mins up to the job but weather postponed the
    erection somedays...

Mark, great story, great pic! Next time I'm up there I'll try to recreate your photo; the landscaping has matured a bunch since that photo was taken!

I'm heading your way, I should be in Mt Airy sometime around 9:30. Shoot me a text if you want to have breakfast at that place by 52 and the parkway.
