I feel like I could make it up the road as long as the rear traction allows but clean-up is not something I enjoy as much as riding. Maybe I'll Jeep it first. If/When I do wash the CJ its only the sheet metal and the wheels/tires.

I won't purposely get my bike dirty, but if it's already trashed, then dirt roads are fair game. If you look close at my bike in the water crossing pic, from a cleanliness standpoint it's already an absolute disaster, hence my willingness to take it swimming.

Denise, sweet wife and kindred spirit that she is, cut me another hall pass for today. :raabia

After breakfast and a few light chores, I headed out. Not more than five minutes into my ride, however, I knew today was going to be a short one.

We're famous for our afternoon summer thunderstorms up here. One minute it's postcard, the next minute it's fire and brimstone; they seemingly pop up out of nowhere this time of year. Alas, I could see multiple cells already beginning to build off to the west when I climbed onto the Parkway.

Wayle, some riding is better than no riding, so I pointed the front tire toward Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, Virginia, about an hour and 15 minutes or so from our garage door. HMSP is close enough to get there and back in a relative hurry, but far enough away to feel like an ADVenture (and the riding to/from is absolutely sublime).

In short order I abandoned ship, however. I had hoped to ride the Back of the Dragon (Highway 16) from Marion to Tazewell, but looking across the lake at HMSP at the rapidly-exploding thunder-busters (I'm guessing the tops were already well past 20,000 feet), after a few photos and a brief rest stop I chickened out and u-turned toward home.

This is basically looking back in the direction of my garage door, approximately 60-ish to 90-ish miles (depending on route) distant. Ruh roh...

I hiked down (east on this crazy map) from "You Are Here" to about the second major kink on the shoreline trail you see depicted above, looking for a place to sit down in the shade (my kingdom for a frikkin' park bench!) and fight off the sweltering heat and humidity. No such luck, but it was a pretty, peaceful hike nonetheless.

This is looking north up the lake from the trail, all the way back toward the beach and swimming area (the wheelchair symbol on the map) shown in the first pic above:

    A decidedly unphotogenic pee stop:

The bike is parked in the only shade I could find.

Last pic on the day, a more attractively-framed version of the above photo:

I zigged and zagged and weaved and woved (?) my way around several of these nasty bastids on the way home, and finally hit significant rain just a mile or two from my garage door. After broiling for most of today's ride, the cooling effect from being wet at speed felt marvelous.

It wasn't until I shut off my bike that I could hear the rumble of thunder coming from several different directions, and I knew I'd made the right call. I'm not a huge fan of riding in rain, but it's only water. I have a very healthy aversion to riding in electricity, however, and try to avoid it at all costs.

I think I ended up with about 150 miles on the day. Not epic, by any means, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

    Ride to lean,
    Ferris

225 miles today, doing the dodge-the-afternoon-thunderstorm-dance pretty much from about noon on. Some pix:
