I am considering a trip to Mexico in May. I know a couple of years ago, there was a ferry running from Tampa to the Yucatan but I believe they have suspended operations. I only have 3 weeks and would like to see as much of Mexico as possible. Does anyone know of any other ferrys from the US to the Yucatan or other parts of Mexico?

    Kenny,
When are you going and what bike are you taking? Is this a dirt trip or pavement? And why wasn't I invited?

I don't know if things have changed, but a few years ago ('98 IIRC) I was looking into this and these ferries are seasonal. Someone told me some of the ferries from up North come down to do the caribbean runs in the winter.

The Yucatan Express. You can drive to Tampa and take a ferry to Merida, and then drive to Belize, all for VERY reasonable prices!! See their website here, and read one person's account of their trip here!

Bulletin: The Yucatan Express is not running this Fall/Winter 2004. Reasons: high port fees and poor channel dredging. They hope to start running again in Fall/Winter 2005. By that time, they should go to CANCUN!!

Newest: (Nov 2005) The Yucatan Express never did run again! The Govt of Quintana Roo never did dredge the port out at Cancun and the Cruise Ship folks eventually gave up. They are planning a ferry from Louisiana to Vera Cruz but that is still in the offing.

From what I can gather from several sites, the Yucatan Express is no more.

Dick, I mentioned to you a few months ago that I would like to go to Mexico in May and you didn't think you could make it. I would love to have some company if you think you can go. I would like to leave on about the 10th of May and stay for 3 weeks. Whatta ya think?

Looks like they were trying to get a ferry from Corpus Christi to Veracruz. Not until at least November.

More fundamentally, the company that owned the Scotia Prince has reportedly put the ship up for sale because their money making Nova Scotia run has gotten dicey. I'm afraid that I don't expect them to ever do the Tampa to Progresso run again.

I have contacted the new company that is taking this over. Their proposed start date is this April 2006. Too late to help me as I'm departing in two days, but it should meet your May trip schedule. I am on their mailing list now and awaiting further info. This is what I found posted on a travel website:

Passenger Car ferry Tampa to Progreso starts April , 2006

The local newspaper this week announced that this ferry service would start Dec. 18. Unfortunately that is incorrect.

The company president in Florida has told Casa Isidora that it will probably be April 2006 before service begins. They will make 2 runs per week all year around. The detailed schedule and prices are not yet published. They will have a new web site in Jan. www.theshuttle.com
The ship will be the MV Jupiter with space for 1250 passengers, 360 cars and lots of cargo.
They are refitting it for 3 restaurants, a casino and swimming pools.
Lets hope this comes to pass.
Tickets will be available at Casa Isidora in Progreso.

If this does come to pass, I'll be using it. Will save a lot of miles from the east coast.

This will be a great thing 'if' it happens. After the 1st service stopped, there was lots of noise from other companies that said they wanted to provide this service/route.

How bout that ultra-fast Miami - Cartagena ferry, huh?

Well said. There was another company with a website and pictures of the ship they planned to use. Never got past one guy with a phone and HTML as far as I can tell.

Let's hope this one comes to pass.

Instead of the ferry thing which wont happen again for a long time, would you be a customer to fly to Mex. and rent an ADV bike from a reputable source who picked you up at airport so as to maximize your time in Mexico?

One of the things I liked about this ferry was that you could ride your own bike all the way around. I like riding my own bikes, renting feels weird to me and Id rather not do it. But I will have to when I start riding in Asia and Australia. :)

Anyone know how much it would cost for a one way trip with a bike to the Yucatan peninsula(airline)? I think that would be a nice little deal.
