Sadly we had to part ways with our new friends, but we will meet them next year in Brazil. We headed along the route of the Estrellas (stars) along which there are numerous observatories on the mountaintops.

We stopped at a huge dam for a break. There was this wind chime sculpture making the most horrific noise.

Next we entered the wine growing region and headed up the long winding Elqui Valley to Pisco Elqui about 107 km east of La Serena. This is the home of the Pisco distillery (national drink is the Pisco sour: 3 parts pisco, 1 part lime, and sugar over ice). It is along the route of Gabriela Mistral (noble winning Chilean poet).

Back tracking to Vicuna we then headed off road on the route of the stars. There were some areas where the road was red.

Heading up over the mountains there were some very steep climbs and sharp switchbacks.

About 3 and after about 180 km we spotted a small shelter on the top of a hill and decided to camp there for the night to watch the stars. Unfortunately it then became cloudy, so we did not see too many starts, but it was quiet in the many hours we were there only 4 cars came by and a heard of goats.

We headed out of the mountains down some steep stretches. And suddenly we were on the great paved road thru lush valleys.

There were still no cars on the back road thru the desert and at times you worried the road was closed. We did however drive thru a Chinchilla sanctuary. It’s not to often you see a sign saying slow down for chinchillas. No cars means no towns, or crappy towns with by the hours motels, so we opted to head back to the Pan Americana at Los Vilos at 310 km to find a place to sleep.

Now we were very close to our goal of Santiago with a day to kill. We opted to stay a night in Limache about 130 km from the city. We toured along the coast and found out where all the rich Chileans live in style.

Arriving in Santiago we stopped at Motoaventura to see if the Heidineu tires for the 650 GS had arrived yet. They are 2 blocks down from the new BMW dealership, which is now the second largest in the world. The service department will move from the old location to there in 2 weeks, so we headed there to see Filipe for our valve checks.

We checked into the Rio Amazonias Hostal on the recommendation of Gino and Fiona. It is in a great location in central Santiago.

We walked to and climbed up the Cerro Santa Lucia for a panoramic view of the city.

There are several pedestrian only roads from here and one leads to the Mercado central. On the corner is a great empanada place packed with locals and where we had a delicious lunch. Inside is the fish market and lots of overprices restaurants.

Now for the all night flight to Miami! We had a great week with 40 friends and family to celebrate the marriage of Gillian and Bruno. There was an official marriage ceremony on Friday night in Vancouver. Sara’s stepmother is a Judge so she performed the ceremony and we watched from Santiago Airport, her sister Emma from Tel Aviv airport and her Brother and his family in Ottawa all via Skype.

After a very long night flight we arrived in Miami along with eventually almost all the other 40 family and guests. Only Sara’s Dad and Barbara were stuck in Toronto because of the weather. Some of the gang with their team shirts and visors.

We managed to get a duffle bag and 2 carry on bags on the cruise ship containing only bike parts that we had shipped to Miami and our cameras. They said there was no rule against bike parts that they could find. We had packed our bag for the cruise and left it in Vancouver for family to bring, so we would have no luggage for the return trip to Santiago except the parts. We were a bit worried that the airplane security and Chile customs could be a bit of a problem. At the airport in Miami they seemed a bit confused, but let us thru with very little issue. After another all night flight we arrived in Santiago at 715 am. We had been warned by our friend Clive that unlike land crossings, when you enter by Air into Chile you must pay a 132$ reciprocity fee. They x-ray your bags here and of course pulled our bags aside. They were actually very nice and after we explained that we were fixing the bikes and all the parts were leaving the country they let us thru. We took a taxi to drop off our Christmas gifts from Santa to Ruben at Johnny Motos and then another taxi ride to BMW to get the bikes for a total of ouch 70$. We finally arrived back at the Johnny Motos shop very tired at 1030.

Ruben’s shop is very clean and organized. He is a very efficient, competent, and careful mechanic. We have 4 riding friends who have had work here and we were very happy with the job he did for us.

Now to race to the coast on Christmas Eve before dark and more important before the liquor store closes. We did have to settle for empanadas, a bag of chips, and a coke from the corner store for Dinner, but at least the botteleria was open for some wine.

Although I won't be fortunate enough to go very far South next year, I'm hoping to at least make it to Colombia in Apr for a 2-3 weeks trip with a good friend from CR. I've already taken some good notes from your adventures, so I'm sure that'll come handy. :-) :deal

As for the rest for South America, I'll have to live it vicarously thru your RR for now.

I met another couple from BC in Playa Hermosa (near Jaco) yesterday. They came down 2-up on a 800GS, and are looking at going South shortly from what I gather. Maybe you guys will run into each other further South, or on another continent!

Happy New Year - wherever you end up to be tomorrow! :clap

You will LOVE Colombia. You must go to the great Hacienda we stayed in in Chinchina. They are super nice people. Also don't miss the riding around Barichara.
