Heading out tomorrow for a good ride finally. Leaving Menomonie WI and heading to SLC. The schedule is less than a week, the plan is to get across the Midwest ASAP and find all the great roads that I can. Will be hitting Yellowstone and the Tetons for some hiking, and exploring that area on the bike as well.

After being mostly parked for the last 1.5 years, the old 1190 is ready to rip. B61584C8-E70A-4A91-9496-1CA7C27B62C2.jpeg

Time to hit the road, but first, priorities. 7CB54D29-7B97-4DFB-B7AE-DB807980B87B.jpeg
This is the loose plan for today. Going to avoid the interstate, but it doesn’t really matter. Flat is flat. And boring.

There are some serious storms firing up today. The radar is ok for now but the Weather Channel says I’m gonna get wet. Such is life. 3D572A67-3B4A-4F4D-BE04-20812128152F.png

After some time on Midwest backroads, I decided to slab it til I got somewhere more interesting. Just got on 90 outside Albert Lea, and planning to haul ass for the rest of the day. Hopefully that will get me south of the developing weather. 170 miles in and time for some gas and cold water. More to come after this stretch of flat desolation.

So far, I’m making decent time on the slab. Averaged 78mph and 41mpg on the last tank of go juice.

Since I’m sitting here enjoying the 30kt breeze under a shade tree, I’ll outline my equipment and what I think of it.

The bike is a 2014 1190Adv. I adore it for the most part, but I’d like to change the grip angle and add electronic cruise control. The Atlas throttle lock I have helps a lot, but obviously can’t maintain a given speed.
    4EC0F2D9-604C-499B-A29C-20D9CAEA05E0.jpeg

The seat is a KTM ergo, and for the money is fantastic. Light years better than the stock seat.

Helmet is a Klim Krios, and I really like it. I do need to change the padding to make it a little more snug, but it’s very good, even in this unforgiving wind.
    B3681870-34C1-4494-BA52-1C1AAFBE0233.jpeg

Gloves are the short Klim Induction. Also excellent. I like how they fit and feel, and that I can somewhat operate my iPhone while wearing them. Just takes some patience. 6D462D6F-8A5B-4A79-BB9A-B235E520DF31.jpeg

For luggage,I have the Touratech Bugcatcher Pro’s, and my Gregory Baltoro 75L, as there is some hiking in my near future. The tent on the right side is a no-name that is old enough to be paying its own bills. Jacket is an AlpineStars something-or-another 3 season and on this 86* day, it’s just ok.

Time to sign off here and make some plans. Can’t wait for tomorrow and the twisty roads.

Camping tonight at the Kennebec, SD KOA. I was glad to see some terrain besides FLAT shortly before stopping for the night. Dinner at the 605, local dive that claims to have good wings. Tomorrow will start with a little more slab, then the Badlands, maybe Rushmore, and then whatever twisties I can find from there. Possibly ending in or near Red Lodge MT for the night. Or maybe dipping down to Colorado, I haven’t decided. All I know for now is that I’m glad to be off the bike
for the night, and hoping the rain hold off as I don’t seem to have a rain fly. 55E42A5F-98A8-4951-A63F-590E4D492EEA.jpeg

Last night I rediscovered the Roadtrippers app and used it to plan out a route I think I’ll enjoy. Some of the waypoints are things I really want to see, and some of them are just there to help create the route I want. I’ve been a little ambitious as I easily have 4 days of travel laid out. I may complete it or may bail at some point, time will tell.

The plan for the first part of today:

    Whew, that was close.

I thought you were missing Beartooth, but looks like you have it covered, thankfully.

If time permits, Chief Joseph Hwy is also very epic.

Looks like a great trip, we'll be following.

All the best out there, update when you can.

    Beautiful bike you've got there!

Yessir, specifically going out of my way to hit Beartooth. I never heard of it until recently, and I’ve been plotting a trip ever since.

12 hours give or take today counting breaks and being a tourist.

I rolled out of the Kennebec, SD KOA at 06:35 and blasted across the prairie on I90 until I finally got to the Badlands. A side note: Exit 150 has regular unleaded only. 152 has premium.

Then back on the road and dealing with construction. This was a reoccurring theme throughout the park.

Moving on, I went on into Rapid City, and then south so I could ride 16a to Rushmore.

After Rushmore, I ended up in Spearfish and decided once again on KOA.

Tomorrow will be Devil’s Tower, Little Bighorn (I think), lunch in Billings, the the Beartooth to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Hoping to stay an extra day there for some much needed hiking. Hope y’all are enjoying this, I know I am.

You got some big miles ahead of you tomorrow. Ride safe and live to ride another day. If you can drop into SLC on US89 through Logan Canyon you’ll have a great ride. Just be careful of tar snakes in the heat of the day. US89 is slower and longer but there isn’t anything to see on I-15 unless you want to count Mormon steeples.

Last night and today did not go as planned. My KOA neighbors last night would not shut their screaming toddlers up. And then about 1am the wind picked up to about 30kts and stayed there until morning. I eventually got some sleep but didn’t get on the road until 8:30. Way late.

I stopped this morning first at the (not) geographic center of the nation for the obligatory pics.

Then I was off to Devil’s Tower to work on the bucket list.

Unfortunately the road to the top is currently closed, and with my late start it was well into the 80’s when I got there. So I went for the full loop trail, jeans, no sunscreen, and all. Full send.

Back to town and then onto Montana, where my timeline and plans fell off the rails.

Little Bighorn was closed by the time I got there, which didn’t make me happy. I really wanted to see the site. Anyhow, by that time I’d stopped several times for breaks as the heat and the seat were getting to me. Losing time every time. Finally called it a night early here in Billings. Shacked up for the night at the Days Inn.

Tomorrow I head to Red Lodge to take that epic road into the Parks. I expect Yellowstone and the Tetons to be a zoo, so I’ll probably just pass through, only stopping at a couple spots. Then away from Jackson toward SLC. Going to stick to mountain roads instead of highways, so I’ll probably camp one more night.

It will be less of a zoo than any other year. It was largely empty the first week of June. Little Bighorn wasn’t even open.

You had an overly ambitious plan. No shame in tapping out early.

The road to the Tetons frequently has grizzly sitings which will back up traffic. Just enjoy it. You don’t want to be the one to change a grizzly’s mind or ruin others’ Bear watching experience. They are cool to watch from a safe distance.

Lots of elk on that road too.

I really enjoyed the sites along the Madison River on June trip but that’s along the West Yellowstone entrance.
