Most of you probably aren't aware that my father and I have never taken a long ride together :norton
He is currently 82 years old :deal
This is the same man who has been riding since WWII. He rode the original R71's during the war. He fought for Germany, was taken as a POW and escaped back home just before the war ended. He wanted to be an aerospace engineer, as he loved aircraft. However, that was a forbidden science :cry Instead, he went to college to be a chemist. In 1949, he toured the Alps in Austria and Switzerland on a 1948 Puch 250, camping every night with a girlfriend :evil He emigrated to the US in 1952, and became a citizen 7 years later. He raised 3 children with my Mom. Two of us, my older Sister and I, served our country as United States Marines.
My Dad always had a street bike as long as I can remember.
He taught me to ride back in 1978 when I was 8 years old. He supported my moto-jones all through my life, but we just never did an overnighter :dunno Finally, we had our chance...

We started Saturday morning, heading toward the southern part of Ohio.

He was having a blast, tooling down the highway.
As a side note, he bought this CS new in '02. This spring, he decided he was more interested in his restored, '62 Austin Healey Sprite, than riding. We bought it from him, saying that anytime he wanted to ride it, he could. I told him about a great place to go...
We stopped for fuel and a break at about 85 miles, and he was holding up just fine...

The trip down included some great roads

    and some great sights

    Riding together...

We got to our destination in the early afternoon, after 180 miles.

Stockport mill was the perfect place to spend time together.
It has been fully rennovated, and turned into a hotel :thumb
They have one of the original turbines on display...

Right after the war, my Dad served an apprenticeship in the machining trade, in a sawmill that was similar to this old grain mill. They both had huge leather belts, lineshafts and no guards on anything :eek1
I think he enjoyed remembering the past here :nod

This pic shows the water flowing past the turbine, making power for the mill in present times.

Our room was great, with it's own little balcony that overlooks the river, with a view of the lock on the other side

That evening, we had some local ADV folks join us for some drinks :freaky and dinner.

We had planned to have dinner in the mill restaurant, but they couldn't accomodate us. So we settled for pizza on the deck instead :thumb

My Dad really enjoyed swapping stories with the guys. I hope they enjoyed it as much as he did :clap

Hey Devildog. Nice ride, report & photos.

All marks to your dad for being such a sport. Truly a man of many accomplishments and I salute his spirit of adventure. He is '82 years young' (not old:D). He is an inspiration for many others who hang up their boots early.

Ride safe both of you and keep the adventure going.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody :wave

We decided to head north in spite of the weather, and meet MentalGS and her girlfriend for breakfast. (Thanks Dawn, for driving, so that Mental could take pics :thumb)
The 4 of us at lunch...

Anyway, on the 12 mile ride to meet the girls, we had to stop twice to clean DevilDads glasses. The moisture was so oppressive, water just beaded up on any surface it touched :huh

From breakfast, we headed out to the "Big Muskie" dragline bucket and miners memorial, via some gravel and then paved roads...

This dragline bucket was the biggest in the world. It strip-mined ohio's coal for almost 30 years. It was dismantled in 1999, and set here to showcase it's once-great might.

It's hard to see in this pic, but just imagine the size of the crane that swung this big ass bucket! :eek1

The memorial is set on a hill, that has some great views of the surrounding countryside...

All of the views as far as the eye can see were once mined by the Big Muskie.

Responsible land management by the coal company has since returned some bueaty to the region :thumb All the areas have been replanted, and native wildlife has flourished :nod
My Dad always told me to keep my nose to the grindstone :lol3

Great twisty roads were the order of the day on our way home

WE stopped for lunch at a little ice cream joint

and saw this fellow pull up

Turning around, we headed out on the last leg back home

Back home at last, after 400 odd miles. He rode every single bit like a man a third his age. We talked about how much fun we had. Prior to this trip, my father had decided to spend more time working with his old sports car, but after this trip, he said he wants to do another ride with me :clap He called again the other night and said again how much fun he had :deal I told him I had the time of my life.
I hope our next trip is better than this one. I can't wait :D

There are reports with more scenic or stunning photos and blah, blah, blah.

I think this is my favorite report for so many reasons, the biggest is that it has opened another door in you and your dad's relationship.

    Very cool.

What an inspiration! Reminds me of a guy I met once at a get together in Hot Springs, Arkansas at a winter get together about '96. Mr. Ed from Chicago was 82 years old at that time also. And, had rode an old airhead down. Wearing old beat up black leathers. Kinda cripple up in the legs. There was ice on the ground where we were much less where he come from. Said he had been riding for 56 years at that time. I told him , " Mr. Ed, I have to grow a few more years before I'm as old as you have been riding.
He and his memories never quit being an inspiration to me ever since meeting him.

Your ride report with your dad has refreshed these memories like it happen today. Thanks so much and my head is bowed to your dad and my hat is off to you for doing this ride with him.

Great thread, man. Having grown up in southern Ohio and now living away, it's great to see some familiar sights.
