Safe travel and stay on the gravel roads w/o slippery surfaces. I trust you will be able to have a great continuation of your MC riding adventure through VN

Given the coronavirus situation you may want to call the US Embassy and at least let them know where you are and where you’re going. If things go south they can be a big help.

There’s a lot of speculation that official numbers are under-reporting. I’ve also read that some smaller villages in China are setting up road blocks to keep themselves isolated. I have no idea if that’s happening where you are but things can change quickly.

Be safe - we’re keeping you in our thoughts!

    This just in on Twitter:

    @BNO Desk
“BREAKING: Sơn Lôi, a village in northern Vietnam, has been put on lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus”

Stay safe guys and good luck navigating through all of this!

Whoa that’s nuts. That’s right outside Hanoi. Like northern Laos, I think it’s pretty safe to assume the infection rate in northern Vietnam is way beyond what they’re reporting.

At a private hospital in Oudomsay right now. Just had the leg x-rayed, waiting for a doctor to arrive (it’s after hours, they must be on call). Nobody speaks English but the place is clean and organized. Pay as you go. $40 for an x-ray. Zero lines, great service so far.

    Shit. Leg’s broken.

The doctor at the hospital above completely missed the break. He looked at the x ray and said all good, just rest up and take it easy. Then I posted a pic on FB and someone else noticed the break and circled it.

I left his office like ‘sweet, I’m fine’ and by the time I got downstairs and saw the post on FB it changed to ‘shit, I’m screwed.’

Probably a trip ending injury for me. Ash will likely continue solo.

Can't "like" any of that news, but if "concerned" from the top of Virginia helps, you have it.

Did you share the red circle and arrow with the local doc?

Dude, I’m totally with the Doctor. I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express once and have had several margaritas tonight which qualifies me to diagnose those red markings as somebody’s kid scribbling on your XRay. Rest up, take it easy and...

I didn’t. It was very hard to communicate. He didn’t speak English. We were communicating through a nursing student who was there as an intern for 4 days, who barely spoke English also. The x-rays were helpful but the advice was not. I think the old injuries and hardware were very confusing to them.

    Damn.....

Doc here says probably a good thing you had the hardware in there or the break might have been worse. At least no displacement.

    How is Ash feeling?

She just took her temperature and it’s down to almost normal. She’s still coughing a lot but the fever was the more troubling bit. Thinking the fever will be gone soon. Man what a mess we’ve been the last few days! Sheesh.

I watched a reportage of the French TV yesterday filming in an area about 200 km from Wuhan. Many roads were blocked by villagers with logs or piles of dirt. Police were seen boarding up homes (with people inside) when it was suspected that they had come from Wuhan. Big and small cities totally deserted. Many tense situations during the filming. Small MC might be able to get around, but then you will be confronted by the villagers who will lock up people for 14 days regardless of their situation

Yeah we’re fine. Ash woke up feeling much better today, I’m just working on the logistics of getting the bike from here back to Vietnam.

I might go to Chiang Mai Thailand for better medical treatment and to rest up with a friend there, then meetup with Ash in southern Vietnam in a week or two.

I'm seeing news items of docked cruise ships involving thousands of people and closed borders. We worry.

I’ll send a PM in a minute but let me know if you’re coming here. Place to stay and we know the hospitals.

Pete and Ash work on a different level of risk aversion and travel than most.

Remember he's the dude who use to hop freight trains to travel...
