This time of year I'm always on the lookout for some good fall color, mainly in the nearby California wine country vineyards. So yesterday I took a nice Solano/Napa/Sonoma county loop to take a reading. The verdict: not cold enough yet to produce dramatic color but things are looking a bit more lively than the dull late summer tones we've had for weeks now. And the temperatures are perfect so that was reason enough to take a nice ride!

I headed out through Wooden Valley on the way to Napa. After months of hot dry summer the vegetation has been looking really dull. Might as well have been black & white.

But finally the vineyards are starting to show a bit of color....

....and if not color at least the patterns are attractive.

Hwy 121's continuous twisties took me over the hill to Napa....

....then it was out Redwood Road to the always entertaining Mt. Veeder Rd.

The summit rewards with great views before a steep descent to Dry Creek Rd.

From atop Oakville Grade the Napa Valley floor was showing the beginnings of fall color. Another week and some colder nights should liven things up.

I hopped on Hwy 29 for a quick run up to St. Helena, only stopping for a cow.

Next up was Spring Mountain Rd., 12 miles of riding pleasure offering twists, hairpin turns, steep climbs and drops, tree tunnels and bumps.

Reaching Calistoga Road I headed north for lunch at Buster's Southern Barbecue. Buster's never disappoints!

    continued next post....

    ....continued

Leaving Calistoga with a full belly I headed down Silverado Trail and took Crystal Springs Rd. up to Angwin, then Ink Grade down into Pope Valley. Ink Grade is one of the more goaty roads around. Narrow, rough, steep, full of hairpin turns and loads of fun.

There was a bit more color in the vineyards of Pope Valley....

....and that feeling of a place lost in time.

After another hour in the saddle I climb back up my own goaty road toward home, feeling like a very lucky old guy. Life is good.

Your posts of rides near home make me look forward (even more) to my retirement in 8 months. There will be many days totally free for rides like these. Love it, thanks!

I have been on almost all of the roads in your Ride Report, but your photos make them look so much better. And the ones I haven't ridden are now on the To Ride list. All of your Reports inspire me to get out and ride, I think that I should slow down and Smell the Roses. Thank You.

What a great post. Beautiful scenery, weather, bike, lunch, tale told. Thanks for sharing. (Not at all envious as I look out at yet another rainy, grey day in Northern England)
