Nah, you don't want a Pinto. I'd hold out for a AMC Pacer
What about a Gremlin?
Or a Vega
Steve(V-strom 1000), Randy (CB500X) and I (Versys 650) went for another ride today. I was hoping for another beautiful day like yesterday but it ended up being overcast most of the day. Oh well, we still had a great ride. The ride started out with around 40 miles of boring four lane until we got on 65 through Paint Rock Valley. What a great road. We rode it at a sportier pace than yesterdays ride. It felt good to be back on the Versys after riding the scooter the last few rides.
After 65/97 there were a few boring miles on 64 before getting back on curvy country roads. Except at the beginning of the ride there were no traffic lights between Gurley and Lynchuburg. The fall colors where mostly past peak but there were some nice colors here and there.
I didn't take very many pics on the way to Lynchburg. I was too busy enjoying all the curves
Here's a couple of pics:
No thanks; I may be slow, but once was enough!
When I was 15 my first car was a '72 Vega (before the sleeved engine). I was getting 18 miles to the quart of oil (anyone remember Rev recycled motor oil?). I would have to buy a case of oil to cruise around on the weekend.
It was only 4 years old when my dad got it for my (and he made my pay him back for it), and it was already shot! I never trusted him to help me find a vehicle again either!
Continuing with the Monday ride....
We stopped in Lynchburg.
We had lunch at the Barrel House. Good BBQ
Steve taking a selfie.
We picked a colorful place to park.
We walked over to the Indian place and checked out the bikes.
When I win the lottery......
Steve checks out the Scout bobber.
The Jack Daniels edition..
This thing was huuuge!
We headed off to Winchester. Some nice curvy roads in the area
When we got near Winchester Steve took the lead. Around 36 years ago Steve lived outside of Winchester and he wanted to find the house he lived in. I took advance of him leading to take some action pics.
Things have changed around here in the last 36 years. Steve took several wrong turns and finally decided he had no idea where his old house was so we continued on to Cowan.
The old train Depot and now a museum in Cowan.
The old gas station.
I think the pumps showed around 36 cents per gallon.
Inside the old service bays.
We headed up 41a towards Sewanee. There are some great curves going up the mountain. We stopped at the rock with the scenic view near the top.
Then we continued on, taking a right on 56/117. Besides some great curves there were some nice fall colors to be seen.
We turned off 117 and rode some Jackson County roads.
Those roads included CR39 which is probably the steepest and twistiest road in Alabama. It makes the Dragon seem pretty tame.
We ended up back on 65 through Paint Rock Valley. It's a fun but following a School bus through is not that fun so we pulled over and let it get ahead.
Getting near the end of 65.
We rode 72/565 back to Madison. I took this last pic as Steve and I were exiting and Randy was continuing on. Randy was doing around 70 here. I think his butt was sore from the long ride.
After a couple of great days of riding I realized a few things.
1. I really like my bikes.
2. I am really lucky to have so many great roads to ride nearby.
3. I am really getting old because despite yesterday being an almost perfect day to go riding, I just didn't feel like it.
So Steve and I had a leisurely day. We headed out mid morning and went to Cycle Gear. We didn't find anything we couldn't live without. Then we stopped at Freedom Powersports.
Steve trying out the Monkey Bike for size.
I sat on some of the sportbikes.
It was reasonably comfortable but I don't think I could go touring on it. Maybe when I was 20-30 years younger. I really liked the Ninja 400.
If I were to get another sportbike it would be something small like these two. I sat on a GSXR 750. I think I could ride that for maybe 5 minutes before needing a chiropracter.
We checked out the Burgman 200. I've been working on Steve for years now trying to get him on a scooter. He liked the B200 but He's not in a rush to buy anything. We were both impressed with this scooter. It will hold two full face helmets under the seat! Neither of us cared for the matte black color.
Haven't seen you since you started growing a beard. It looks good!
Thanks. I only grew it in the last two months. My wife has been bugging me for years to grow one. Last time I had a beard was about 40 years ago
After Freedom we stopped and got some lunch. Then we made a small detour to the Space and Rocket center to get some pics. We both took a bunch. I won't bore you with all of them.
We moved over to the SR-71.
I think Steve and the Honda Monkey look like a great match. I see a garage of monkeys in his future.
He's got a big enough garage for a barrel full of monkeys, but I don't see that happening.
The day wasn't over yet. We had time for another ride. This time we headed for my favorite sunset viewing spot. We left plenty early to get there......I thought. Because of the time change we left right at peak rush hour and the traffic outside my subdivision was heavy from people leaving Redstone. So that slowed us up a bit but then once we cleared that traffic we got stuck behind a giant cotton picking machine taking up the entire road at 20 MPH
We eventually got to a spot just short of my normal spot right as the sun was setting. There were no clouds so it wasn't a spectacular sunset but I still got some pics.
That's all for now. Thanks for following along.
It looks like crappy weather for tomorrow and cold on Friday. I will probably set up another ride for Saturday. Maybe back to the Old Delina Country Stor?
Forty years between beards!! I haven't taken mine off in over 40 years. Most of the people I know have never seen me with a clean shaven face.
I guess it was only 37 years. This was me in 82 or 83:
Me with both my sons in 1974 and me with my younger son last year . Lots of change in beard colour and body shape. LOL
