We asked the lady at the gas station if there was any place to eat nearby. She recommended the Reliance Fly & Tackle. Andy wasn't here yet so we left word where we were going and headed off. I stopped on the bridge and took some pics.

    .

After crossing the the bridge we decided to see if the Firewater Grill right by the bridge was open. It didn't look like anyone was there but it was open.

    .

I had the feeling that someone was watching us.

Andy eventually found us. He assumed we would be at the Fly & Tackle and went there first.

After a long leisurely lunch it was time to head off. Steve would be leading as this part of the ride would be mostly off the pavement and we knew where we were going, unlike this morning:D

We made our way down to the Appalachia power house.

It was like herding cats but I got everyone to line up all the bikes so I could get some pics.

I headed out on the footbridge.

This powerhouse gets water through a pipe that comes from the dam which is located 12 miles upstream.

I rode ahead for some action shots. Here comes Steve.

    There goes Steve.

    Andy.

    Rich.

    Here comes Jeff.

    There goe.............well maybe not....

Contrary to the rumors I did not take a dozen pics before trying to get the bike off of Jeff.

    I only took one:D

His leg was trapped under a soft saddlebag. Good thing he didn't have hard cases.

Jeff was good to go so we went.

Our next stop was the alien/UFO landing pad.

Now someone will probably come along with some crazy story about this being part of an old cement mixing plant or some other BS. Don't believe it. It's a landing pad built by aliens to land their space ships so they could observe the culture of Earthlings.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

Those holes above are where the aliens lowered themselves from the spaceships.

We didn't go to the other structure around the corner because some family had decided to set up camp right in the middle of the road:dirtdog

Greg had mentioned that last time he was here he found a trail to a section of the water pipe that goes to the power house so we decided to try to find that. I headed off thinking Greg would be right behind me. I went a short way, stopped and took some pics. No Greg.

I went a bit further watching for a trail to the left. I stopped again and took more pics.

A couple of riders came by. You can just see one in the above pic.

    Still no Greg.

I continued on until i found what looked like it might be the trail we were looking for.

I waited for a while. Still no sign of the others. Maybe someone's bike wouldn't start? Maybe there are still some strange residual electromagnetic fields near the Alien landing pad that messed with someone's electrical system??

    :hmmmmm

Boy that’s a lot of green plastic in those pics. Doesn’t bode well for team “red” low siding in the curve. Great adventure. Love the landing pad. Maybe they’ll come back and stay awhile.

Here's an earlier version of the alien platform!

They can use the long slide to get down from the landing platform

That's a photoshopped government propaganda pic. Where would the UFO's land?

I was waiting for quite a while. Several truck came by. It was the opening day of bear season so there was more traffic than normal out here. Where was the rest of the group? Had they been abducted by aliens?

    Finally I heard some bikes.

    .

They stopped and I got the story. Apparently I had missed a trail. They went down that trail but it was the wrong one. So we went down this one. It was a narrow, twisty, rocky and sometimes trail that wound its way down the mountain.

And it was the right one!

I continued down the trail. There was an intersection with a left turn that went back to the pipe just above where we had stopped before.

I yelled down and the rest of the crew rode up to where I was.

    .

    .

The pipe was leaking. Maybe someone should call a plumber:dunno

The pipe went into the side of the mountain.

At the time we discussed the difficulties in engineering and construction of this pipe. After returning form the trip I researched this pipeline. It is 8.3 miles long and all but 1600 feet are tunnels. More details are here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apalachia_Dam

I'm thinking that maybe the aliens helped in the construction of this thing.

    Random wildlife pic.

I think Steve was talking so much it made Jeff's head hurt:jack

Some of us continued down the trail to see where it went. It went all the way to the railroad tracks that ran along the river and by the powerhouse.

The track looked well enough maintained to get some use.

I was hoping a train didn't come along while I was on the bridge because I didn't want to have to rush and maybe put my foot between the railroad ties.

After checking out the railroad tracks and bridge we headed back out and continued down the main forest road until we ended up on pavement.

    .

We got on 68 and headed north.

Here we are crossing the Hiwassee River. The railroad line we checked out a bit earlier crosses 68 on the bridge we went under in the background.

We still had some time to ride before dinner so we decided to head for the top of Buck Bald. Four of us took trail 82 while the rest went up the main forest road.
