Then the skies opened up and it rained hard for awhile as the temperatures dropped into the 60's. It felt wonderful after the scorcher temperatures that I had to ride through to get here. Probably rode about 600 miles today. But, now I'm in the good stuff. The "Back of the Dragon" is just up the road !

Scott can't take it anymore. He called me last night. The weather still sucks up north. He's going to jump on his RT and head down here today. Can't blame him. We'll meet up in Hot Springs, North Carolina tonight.

Live from the DAT (Damascus to Augusta Trail) -

Afternoon coffee-time atop the Rich Mountain Fire Tower. Have BMW Adventure, Starbucks, Jetboil, and Aeropress - will travel. No posers. Absolutely gorgeous day. A couple of Appalachian Trail hikers just came through here, as the trail runs nearby. I've been following the DAT the last couple of days from Damascus, Virginia - which is also the southern terminus of the MABDR.

My serene and breezy coffee spot. Total silence other than the mellow sound of the breeze rustling through the trees along with song birds chirping it up. Feels like air conditioning up here in the open tower. The floor is aluminum grating also, which allows the air to flow even better. Pretty sure this is still Pisgah or Cherokee National Forest. Will have to check the maps later.

Scott made it down. RT on the DAT. Riding along the French Broad River just outside of Hot Springs, North Carolina. Time to eat, drink, and be merry; time to reload.

This morning around 10 A.M. is when I'd reconnected with the DAT and started negotiating the backcountry route - which would eventually deliver me to Hot Springs.

This morning Scott also departed Monroe, Michigan (between Detroit and Toledo) at 6:30 A.M. - en route to Hot Springs.

With those two diverse locations and routes, we had no idea what time either of us would arrive; we just planned on meeting up in Hot Springs and spending the night there.

Interestingly, we both arrived into the small Appalachian Trail town of Hot Springs within 15 minutes of each other. That's synchronicity.

Scott - Rehydrating at the Iron Horse Station (named after the railroad tracks that pass by in close proximity).

Not much going on in this sleepy little village of a few hundred people, which is a welcome respite from the chaos up north.

Enjoying your report. Those roads around Bland are outstanding. And I had the best cinnamon roll in my life in Burke’s Garden. From an Amish lady sitting at a roadside booth,,,

Glad you're enjoying the report, brother. More pictures and details will follow when I return home. It's hard to elaborate too much while on the road. Hope all is well with you. I still have fond memories from years ago when we knocked down that Lake Superior 1000. Time flies !

As the journey started turning back north, another little section of the Kentucky Adventure Trail (KAT) was pursued.
