Tires can certainly affect mileage. Knobbies have more rolling resistance and, to a lesser degree, more wind resistance.

    '02 1150GS --- I was gonna say something like:

    Normal: 38 - 40

When I'm not speeding: 45 average (post $250 speeding).

At the time I got my last big ticket, I calculated that my improved fuel economy would pay for my ticket in a scant 191 commuting days....

I'm back to normal and looking over my shoulder all the time.

Yesterday after 111 miles I observed 37 mpg. The riding was mixed with some extended periods of post century speeds topping out at about 120. Did a number of third gear full throttle passes up to about 100 mph. This bike has the most recent software.

3.0 final drive, standard size System Cases, PIAA 520s, TKC-80s or Anakees (i have wheels set up with both).

average tanks for my sea level Kombat Kommute are typically in the low 30s, but the average Kommute is either lane-splitting in 2nd or approaching 6K in top gear; very little in-between.
best tank ever was low 40s, putting along while swivel-heading fully loaded on tour while using out-of-state fuel and at altitude.

other factors detracting from better numbers are my 'spritied' riding style, the fact that i'm using California fuel, and that i changed out the overly optimistic Speedo Drive for one that's more accurate. i haven't been able to document any difference between the tires i use; the TKCs may be less efficient, but i push harder when on the Anakees.

    cheers!

The Buell rocks, in this department. I get 45-55, depending on where/how I'm riding. What's with the Cali gas? I get 5-10% worse mileage as soon as I hit the border. Just clocked in 53mpg average on my <3k trip to OR/ID from SoCal, loaded (the bike, not me). My Airhead gs/pd would have taken me more places, but at 32mpg. I opted for visiting the hot springs that were closer to the pavement.

Caveman..If you got a bit closer my wife said that you could have loaded the bike into the van and gotten better mileage. NASCAR calls this bump drafting at Daytona and Taladega!!!

'03 KLR, best= 63mpg (offroad, low speed, mojave trail) worst= 33 mpg (road trip to coast, headwind and excess speed. The one and only time I had to resort to laying the bike down on its left side to get that hidden gallon).
