Going to the Cascapedia to do some fly fishing (about 15km up the valley from New Richmond). Coming from Ottawa, so I'll likely follow the St Larry along the south shore. Heading for Newfoundland after a few days of whipping the pools into a frenzy, and sipping fine malts in the lodge with friends.

Question: Which route from the south shore to Baie des Chaleurs affords the best views / twisties / etc -- the 132 or the 299? Won't have time to ride both on this trip.

    TIA,
    BV

Just don't ask any of those french-canucks, they'll only stare at you and be generally cold and unwelcoming. My parents equated it to getting directions from a brick wall.

(I will ask dad if he took either of these roads on their recent loop of the Gaspe)

DadIt says they didn't venture inland on 299. They just did the loop of the peninsula on 132, and that 132 is twisty/scenic on both the north and south side of the peninsula, but only east of Rimouski (west of that is all "industrialized" - and i'd guess you know that since 299 is also well east of there).

Ontario highway 138 south, cross border at Cornwall, cross back again at Fort Covington, :freaky.

Ottawa / Montreal / Quebec City direct is generally pretty boring. Photos I've seen of the coastal road indicate an agreeable ride.

But I can ask in French :D

Tell him 'thanks', and please give him my best.

You're out in that neck of the woods somewhere, aren't you? I should be blasting through early Sat morning.

Nice. I think I'll head in that way.

I'll be staying at Camp Derreen, about 15km from New Richmond, but thanks for the tip on the Gite -- I'll keep that in mind for next time.

"Marcel" knows these parts very well, including the dirt stuff off 299. Contact him if you have some exploring time.

    Cool - thanks Gerald :thumb

(My parents just did a loop of the peninsula, was curious what the interior looked like)

132 is pretty, but not THAT pretty (never been on 299, but it sure looks nice from the pics).

Yes, 299 is pretty. Not real challenging riding unless you're doing over 100 mph, but it gets a little bumpy at those speeds.

The Gite Mont Albert is nice as well...
