At a minimum, a set of rear shocks, probably in the 12-12.5 inch range. This will help quite a bit but you'll still be left with a mildly lowered rear and a low front.

Ideally, a set of full-length shocks (13-14") and a set of the longer damper rods to raise the forks up. A set of fork springs probably wouldn't be a bad investment either as Harley seems to choose fork spring rates based off an 8yo, 75lb rider. :lol2

    ^ This!!

I did exactly this on my "much too low" Iron 1200. 13.5" shocks and 9.5" damper rods along with some fork cartridges. Super easy to do. Tuning the suspension takes long than the parts swap.

    Ground clearance :D

I’m sure it does. I’m just used to a 30 in. seat height.

I have not owned one but FWIW the 2000-2003 Sportsters including the XL1200S model got sealed wheel bearings and better brake calipers

That was the year of my first one too. I like the spark generator on the left side.

Me too. I have a Buell Ulysses and have owned other ADV bikes but there is something just so damn sexy about a Sportster wearing knobbies and a tall suspension.

dual plug heads came in 1998 Per Wikipedia:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley-Davidson_Sportster

I was thinking this was introduced in 1997, but perhaps I’m right, but it was introduced for the ‘98 model year. A great bike regardless.

and that is why Sportsters make the perfect universal motorcycle. They can be anything that a person can imagine. Choppers, customs, dirt, flat trackers, street trackers, tourers, adventure, drag bikes, road racers and the list can go on forever. And they all look so good doing whatever they have been developed/designed to do. But don’t tell everyone, used Sportsters are cheaper now than I have seen in the past 40 yrs....

I have put about 2200 miles on my 2009 883 now and its doing well and I am liking it a lot.
Nice suspension really makes a difference and the fork work really pays off big time.

I have not seen as good a deal as I got, but there are some good buys out there on sportsters.

Where are you? That was true here in AZ pre-pandemic, but prices spiked last year and haven’t dropped back down. Doesn’t matter to me right now, I took a pay cut that looks to be in place for the foreseeable future, just as the prices spiked. Damn COVID…

Same here in the Southeast, Sportster prices have gone up, at least the rigid mount evos I was looking at.
