Fill up at the beginning of the Dempster also get you some extra fuel if you are going to need it. The gas here is cheaper than in Dawson. This gas station only accepts a credit card Visa or Master Card I believe. IMG_6228.JPG

The ride up the Dempster was painfully slow the rain had been falling for a few days prior to are attempting the trip. We checked the road condition report before heading out. No real problems to speak of just some sections of road repair and some frost heaves to watch out for. IMG_6233.JPG

Some parts of the road were very slippery we came close to falling on more than one occasion took us 11.5 hours to get to Eagle Plains. We took along an extra 2.5 gallons of fuel a 10 liter can to be exact. We didn't need it we got to Eagle Plains with gas in the tank approx. 40 miles worth.

There is a wooden deck bridge to cross over on the Dempster also a metal grate decked bridge we crossed one other bridge with a normal concrete deck. For us all were dry and no problems. The road surface varies greatly down near Route 5 the road seems to be more rocky and less prone to be as slippery when wet. The further North that you travel the road seems to consist basically of clay mixed with calcium chloride. This stuff gets very slippery and hazardous to travel on while on two wheels when wet. We traveled across some short sections of this at about 1 mile an hour while I was paddle footing it to keep the bike upright. Pay close attention to the warning signs don't get in a hurry and you should be just fine. IMG_6235.JPG

Camping at Eagle Plains they have two dogs to keep the bears out of the camping area. They were both needed as a bear had been prowling around for the past couple of nights. The dogs patrolled the camp grounds throughout the night. No bear problems I am very glad to report. IMG_6305.JPG

The ride down The Dempster was dry and much easier than the ride up. The speeds were 55 mph to 65 mph a good part of the way. The Dempster is a tricky road to read the first day for me was a learning experience. The second day is to put what you have learned in practice. If you payed attention the first day you made it to your destination. If you remembered what you learned on the ride up.The ride down is another successful ride on the Dempster and much more enjoyable. The food at Eagle Plains is good the people who work there are friendly and more than ready to help. This would be a good place to hang out for a couple of days while waiting for the road surface to dry so you could finish a ride on the Dempster. We did have some rain through out the day on the ride down. Most of the rain occurred further South or closer to Dawson than Inuvik. The wet road surface in this area caused little problem for us. Caution is always advised be safe ride within your limits and have a ball.

The Ferry across the Yukon to the TOTWH. Then the Taylor Highway to the Alaska Highway to TOK. Which is where we are for the next two nights. After which we head to Fairbanks and the Denali Highway then on to the Dalton to make a stop at the other Arctic Circle Sign. We are not going to Deadhorse I don't really see much reason to. After which we will just cruise around and take in the sights and sounds of Alaska. IMG_6349.JPG

The ride up from TOK to the Denali Highway was wet and chilly. Temperatures were in the low 50's fahrenheit with a cold steady rain. We road the Denali without any issues. I stopped an marked a spot for Project Mayhem. Not exactly his crash site as I did not have the coordinates to put into my GPS. My heart was in the right place even though my urine may not be. I hope this will suffice. :-) From Paxson where we started on the Denali is paved for about the first 20 miles or so. Then the road turns into basically a high speed gravel road. Although road surfaces were wet for over half the ride the traction was mostly good to very good. Some road construction is in progress non actively on Sunday. All hazards are plainly marked so the ride although cool and raining for most of the day was very much enjoyable for both myself and Toni. We stopped and had lunch at the Meier's Lake Road House. The burgers and soup was simply amazing. Very nice people run the Roadhouse you can also gas up there if you need to before starting the Denali. They have a museum in The Road House if you stop in take some time to look around. There is a small chapel across the street you may also go in and check it out very cool.
