The Bluehead Made It Home: The folks at the dealer finally got the right shoes on Kevin's bike and delivered it to our door this afternoon. With the exception of some old gas that I need to get out of the tank, it's ready to roll.

May 21 Redux: Is there an award for posing your bike with three bridges at at the same time? I ask, having just found and converted another shot of a ride taken some years back on this very day. There are three different bridges in this 5/21 picture.

Haunted Hoosac Pilgrimage - Still On The Mohawk: Rt. 2 changes from 4 lane to 2 at coordinates 42.572177, -72.133478 and I was now on the 2-lane part heading toward Erving, MA.

The approach into Erving is shown below.

It was in Erving where I made my first stretch and hydrate stop just across from the old freight house (now an antique store and cafe).

Here is where I turned north to catch Mountain Road west to where I could cross the CT River. More to follow.

May Pond Redux: About this time 3 years ago saw me enjoying a little downtime by a pond in the Harvard Research Forest.

Harvard Forest is a 4,000 acre research area that was established in 1908 by Harvard University.

Essence Of A Great Road For Old Goats: First, the road should be a mix of gravel, sand and dirt. It should have hills, twists and turns. Potholes and ruts are good but not as deep as 1 ft., please. Some flat and relatively smooth portions are welcomed. A little mud and slime is OK but just not on the steep, winding portions. A few scattered homes along the way is good in case you get into trouble and cell coverage is bad. The road should be well-shaded, if not like a forest tunnel, to stay cool.

Not How You Do It: This is not how to preserve a historic structure. This "historic" building is an old school house. You can tell by the design, if not the placard out front. You can also tell it was used as a farm shed, judging by the big door on the side of the building. They didn't have pupils that big back then.

The sign says 1674 but another placard says it dates back to 1888. I'll go with the latter date. Regardless, the thing is on its last legs and could collapse any day now.

The last time I rode by here years ago, the building was in pretty good shape. The roof was intact, there was very little lean or sag. Had they thrown a plastic tarp over top, the old school would not have deteriorated this bad. I will try to find a picture of it back then. The old school is located at coordinates 42.392595, -72.203620.

Haunted Hoosac Pilgrimage - Mountain Road: The trek west from Rt. 2 in Erving, MA, went northwest up Mountain Road to just south of Northfield, MA. The intent was to cross the CT River heading towards Bernardston. Below are four shots taken on Mountain Road.

Needles to say, our "mountain roads" are nothing like those in the Smokies, Rockies, Alps, Tirol, etc. More like "hill roads", They are good riding, though.

What A Difference 7 Years Made: I passed this place for the first time back in 2014. Architecturally, it looked like a late 1600s domicile with attached carriage barn that had been converted into a farm stand or shed at some point.

This what it looked like earlier this week.

Just another place we'd love to know the history of.

That and a hallelujah for the nice 70° riding weather. Today, though, is going to get a little toasty with temps 90 and above.

Haunted Hoosac Pilgrimage - Through Bernardston: Mountain Road got me to where I wanted to cross the CT River on Rt 10, which took me into Bernardston, MA. Bernardston was the jumping off point for wandering west through the northern part of the state up near the VT border. Below are 3 shots taken cruising through Bernardston.

Haunted Hoosac Pilgrimage - Heading West: Bernardston sits in the CT River valley. From here we began heading west, turning onto another "Mountain Rd." by the Farm Table restaurant, below.

For a little ways, you are in the river valley farmland area.
