I ran into the same problem. I was using City Select and topo. I got a copy of R & R and was able to fill in some of my missing route (or tracks) which ever you prefer but there was still some sections that were not on any of them. I did my best to try to duplicate Sam's route but I may have to use the route sheet in some areas. There is only 3 or 4 sections that are missing and even if I don't follow his exact route, I figure it is no big deal, as long as I get back on it when I can.

Yea, I cross-referenced Sam's maps with google earth a few times. It only happened on those dashed-line trails on the maps. No biggie though.

I wonder if it had to do with what version of R&R you have.

i'd like to keep it under 500$. Id rather spend a little more money on something that will last as well has have the ability to use others gps files, which the MIO cannot do without a serious hack somehow.

For $500 you can get a 276c which is considered by many to be one of the best GPS's for adventure travel available.

i notice the 276c is sold with charting software for boating.
can I use this gps for both offroad navigation as well as turn by turn road navigation? sorry for the neophite questions but just trying to get a grasp of this beast.

PS: you want to do the TAT again?

I owned the 76c which is similar to the 60csx. Its a good hand held unit but the screen is pretty small. I like the SC cards on the x models.

I plan to finish the TAT from Moab to OR this summer with the SpringTAT group.

Im also in the forum for that group. i'm trying to organize the time from work to do that part of the TAT as well.
Where do you hail from? If i go I will rent a pickup from budget and drive down and do the same coming back.

I'm from Kentucky, a few of the guys on there are from IN.
What I found last year is that the rental companies won't rent pickups one way. I rented a 10' van instead.

Good idea. its a full 36 hours of driving non-stop from Boston to Moab...

I have a 478 and I'm quite impressed with the display and maps. I boat and ride and it seems to be a great combo. I got it from GetFeetWet Navigation.

My wife and I are planning on starting on the TAT on June 27 and have received the maps from Sam and also bought the TOPO map from Garmin. It appears the file will be bigger than the largest chip available. From what I've read here (and having tried a few) it seems to be a daunting task to input all the waypoints. Who do we need to ask nicely for a copy of their waypoints to load in?

First of all forget Topo, it is a memory eater. Find yourself a copy of Roads & Rec. I can get the entire TAT on R&R in around 200 mb. Next, use track points not way points to map out the TAT. This should take you no more than 2 hours per state. Loading the track yourself will teach you invaluable information about the trail that you will not get using someone elses work.

+1. I am doing this right now and it works much better than routes. (You can't even route on R&R so it really a mute point)
