King Wally’s Crown!
Wally Goes Bananas!
The best Aussie rider not to score a decent GP ride eh.
His last GP appearance (from memory) was on a 500cc Elf that Ron Haslam had been campaigning, and (again from memory) in his one-off ride at the French GP he finished in front of Haslam too.
And he beat Gardner twice in a 6-race Swann series on an allegedly older inferior 3-cylinder 500. That cost him dearly with the Japanese heirarchy at Honda for causing them to lose "face".
The first modern Aus GP in 1989 at P.I. Honda made absolutely sure he wasn't going to beat Gardner again and leave them with egg on their faces. Yamaha gave Michael Dowson his bike weeks before the event, for testing, tuning, and setup to suit him. Wally got to see his bike only on the first day of the event, so he was right behind the eight-ball from the get-go. Bastards eh.
I watched Wally win the last ever race at Surfers Paradise too (beating a certain Mr Kevin Magee, who scored a GP ride). He was awesome.
Here he is at the 2016 Historic Champs held in Tassie, he finished in second less than 0.5 seconds behind his son.
Wally still is awesome.
There's plenty more than I who'd like to be able to see which way he went.
Crump... or Hancock... ? @Bluetonguejak
not just a photo... but epic history of board track (similar to velodrome) racing...
... so sometime around 2015 in the states... someone had the idea to revive boardtrack racing... with these old machines...
if you cannot play the link... go to youtube.com and search for "Sons of Speed".
Pussies! Real racers do it one-handed (and no helmet) for extra streamling.
She's still got two hands on the bars... if we're being pedantic Ron.
Aren't we always, Troy?
Not 100% sure Troy, but reckon it's Hancock.
Have had pleasure of seeing both race live.
I'll argue photoshopped images are not "great motorcycling photos" at all, just a made-up electronic manipulation and a wank that detract from the real world images.
They may be nice pictures, illustrations or whatever but a photo is a photo.
I was there. I miss the racing from the Easter meeting, although I don't miss the fatalities.
The last time I was there was when the sidecars had a record field of nearly 70 outfits and on the second or third lap a challenge for 3rd place out of McPhillamy Park along Skyline went wrong and 2 blokes were killed, one instantly and the other by another sidecar as he tried to flee the oncoming field. The rest of the field came around the bend hard on the throttle at 200kph, already balanced for the left-hander, and sight-unseen of the carnage in front, all 60-plus or so of them. I was right there too and witnessed the whole thing. It was pretty ugly.
That tragedy pretty much killed off the extremely popular at the time roadrace sidecars in this country. Lots of written-off outfits and lots of injuries too, and it demonstrated that the circuit needed further work for bike racing.
Exactly. Someone has taken a genuine image of a real thing with a camera, not just sat at home photoshopping any old shit.
This place burned down and as far as I know doesn't exist anymore. Here is BoySilla and a c*nt thinking "Should we? Or should we just keep going?"
Looks like Bob Levy, and ‘The Wedge‘. (#7). But I wouldn’t have thought he was still doing it then.....?
I’m thinking this is more Taylor/Frazer, Chivas/Halliday...Mayhaps Spence Feeney type era?
So who’s in the Wedge?
My, how things have changed.....
