Bike is currently at Adventure BMW for a new driveshaft. Front u joint failed a week ago while on 64 near the Greenbrier exit. Oh what fun it was pushing the beast with a rubbing shaft and all. 20210615_152719.jpg 20210619_170447.jpg 20210619_170503.jpg

If you would please keep us appraised on opinions etc. My interest is the same bike with 32k on it. Glad you didn't have a lock up!

It is a great bike and setup for my figure of 5 foot 18 inches and 267 heavy feathers.

No lock up but a lot of rattling until I could get it stopped.

    So you're 6'6" (5 foot 18 inches) ?

I hope the damage was minimal, good thing the final drive is enclosed verses the "Ole School" setup. :hmmmmm

I’d love to hear why they think it failed? Dude, that could have spelled disaster. Have you ever heard about that before?

New shaft and forward boot that got ripped due to flailing shaft. Also had the final drive outer seal changed while in the shop. Had some moisture on the non wheel side seal so better to be safe. Reason for failure? High miles (over 81k) and steep angle because I keep the suspension at 2 up. Some rubbing in inside of swingarm but still usable.

    Shaft alone was over $1300.

Yea . . . "Bring More Wallet" (BMW). Did the shop mention any "shoulda, coulda, oughta's" like PM (preventative maintenance)?

Nothing to prevent the failure. U joints are non greaseable. Once they go bad BMW only sales a new shaft. Some folks have successfully changed a u joint before total failure but I was unlucky when it let go on I64.

Got it back and she rides like a dream again. Time for another 80k to 100k hopefully before another new shaft.

I had a u-joint go on a Seca 900 go on me years ago. After 70k miles. It started to make an odd knocking noise. Then slipping as I left the toll at the Coleman bridge. Made it home 18 miles from the bridge. Then it failed while messing with it in the driveway. The factory manual described the symptoms exactly. :lol3 Replaced the u-joint for a couple hundred bucks and sold it after another 40k miles. Keep on truckin.

Yea it’s a hoot! Went up a couple years ago and it is a charity thing for the local FD. Been waiting for them to do it again post COVID.
