Has anyone travelled on a long cross-country trip with two different helmets?

Am I crazy thinking about bringing my Shoei Qwest and Bell MX-9 on a long trip?

My thinking is that as much as I try to avoid interstate like roads, I always seem to end up on them when trying to make up time.

My thinking would be to wear the Bell most of the time, but for the freeway, switch to the Shoei.

If I had to pick one it would be the Bell. I would be carrying the second helmet by bungie netting it to my duffle bag, no fancy top case yet.

Bell: rarely fogs (awesome in the rain), a touch noisier than Shoei, cooler at lower speeds, prefer to leave peak on even at highway speeds (neck has got used to it)

Shoei: touch quieter, warmer, feels so light and aerodynamic at higher speeds, fogs easily (want to try Respro Foggy mask)

No. I can't afford the space.

Life is a compromise. Pick one. Or get an ADV style helmet. I settled on a Hornet X2. It turned out to be quieter than my RF1200.
A Pinlock visor can help with the fogging.

back when I attended daytona bike week, I would ride down from PA with my fullface(usually in the snow!) but I would have my open face in my stuff so I could enjoy that florida sunshine while putting around the back roads.

I'd never do it, but if you have the space and are willing to deal with the extra hassle, why not? I know riders who tour around with crazier stuff: hairdryers, trailers, more than one extra pair of underwear, etc. :^)

Change have to, to want to.

I am thinking dealing with an extra helmet MIGHT be worth it for the various pros/cons I listed.

I know the Arai flagship ADV helmet would solve my problems, but I have other things to spend that $ on, maybe next season!

I've toured with a full face and an open face helmet...………...But I was riding solo on a Goldwing at the time :lol3

Seriously, you could buy a modular helmet and do your toodling around with it flipped up when the mood hits. Some helmets are better than others at doing this, and yes kids, don't do this at home lest you get rousted by the helmet police on advrider.

If you have the space. Have at it if this makes sense vs buying another helmet.

I haven't felt the need, but when solo my trunk is near empty as is the back seat.

I was positive that I would meet a beautiful, adventurous girl somewhere who would need a helmet if she was going to ride into the sunset with me.:rayof

    Don't ask.

(Never carried a spare helmet after that trip.)

Well it wasn't a success...one sleepy morning I was switching helmets, and was too lazy/heavily loaded to put the centerstand up when making a few packing changes, and the bike went over. Good thing, my Bell MX-9 Adv helmet was on the throttle to break the fall. I'd already messed up the throttle from the day before on a 0 km/h down, so really...it may have saved the trip...

Motorcycling, is there anything else that can build up and break down one's ego as fast?
