The Hartland Inn began operation as a hotel and restaurant in the early 1900s. The rooms upstairs are no longer in use, but the restaurant still is open.

One night after closing time in 2002 or 2003, the bussers were folding napkins around table 9 when they heard a bloodcurdling scream coming from the basement. Investigation revealed no one was there. There have also been sightings of a little girl in a Victorian-style sailor outfit in the basement.

Very powerful negative feelings can be felt by the guest house and the blacksmith shop.

One of the doors in the window has been reported to slam shut without anyone being there.

A dark figure walks back and forth upstairs while looking in the front windows.

The figure sometimes rushes people and hits them with enough impact to make them fly off the porch.

Many people have reported seeing a mysterious hitchhiker on Hwy 12 near Baraboo. The man is clad in a tattered green army jacket, has black hair, and a beard. If you pass him by, he will appear again about a mile down the road ahead of you. People that have stopped to pick him up report that he disappears.

This mass of unmarked graves is said to be a hotbed of restless spirits that can be felt as well as seen. People say they see figures of adults and children slowly walking through the fence here.

Back in 1862 Milwaukee County purchased some land here for a poor house. It was seven difficult miles away from the city. I guess no one dreamed that this would eventually become a modern medical complex.

Admission to the Almshouse required a judge’s order, documented poverty, lack of any sympathetic relatives or friends, and the signatures of two County taxpayers.

The sick and disabled came here as well. They worked the farmland as kind of a cottage industry.

When they died, the county buried them. Since "lowest bidder" was involved, coffins were pretty basic and about 4' long. Thousands were buried in unmarked graves. The county lost track of the extent of the burial site and ended up digging up bones for some hospital construction.

Pinky is the nickname of a local actor who died in 1968. He suffered a heart attack after he left the stage after the poker game scene of "The Odd Couple" where he was playing the role of mild-mannered Vinnie.

Pinky was a prominent actor who had been with the playhouse since it opened in 1960. Now he haunts the place.

He is quite a prankster, as he was when he was alive.

People report hearing his foot steps. Once, when people were working in the board room, he slammed the doors shut. People at the Playhouse welcome his presence.

Sometimes when pictures are taken in the cemetery a thick mist will appear in the image.

Witnesses report they were hanging out there at night when a mist started forming in front of their car. It drifted up and formed the shape of an old man.

They reported you could see his eyes, face, clothes, hands, and beard - but you could also see right through him and see the trees on the other side of him.

The previous owner is said to haunt the place.

He was a painter. Many of his paintings are on display. A painting near the fireplace has hunting dogs with ghosts hidden in the picture.

The building is built on an old log hunting cabin. The basement bar is said to be cold and eerie.

Spot on Cannon. In 1989 I was the project engineer for a construction company performing all the expansion for Froedtert Hospital. During excavation to the east of their parking structure we uncovered the caskets and bones of the paupers graves. Not even the city of Wauwatosa had any knowledge of the location of these graves. The project was immediately shut-down and the site became an archeological dig for the next 4-6 weeks. One day, out of the blue, a 80+ year old man walked into the job trailer with a roll of plans under his arms that no one had any knowledge of their existence. These plans showed locations of numerous burial sites that were also unknown. It was interesting looking at the plans as they were very UN-politically correct. Instead of what we now call a "mental health center" was labeled the "insane asylum". It was explained to me that the term "funny-farm" was due to the "insane" helping on the farm which helped to sustain the facility. During the excavation of the graves we learned a grisly fact. As Canon noted, the caskets were typically 4 feet in length. How do you fit a 5 foot tall person into a 4 foot casket? Their legs were broken and folded up along side them. At first no one could figure out why the dig revealed everyones feet were located next to their hands. Too much info?

Great info! Sometimes history isn't what we'd expect it to be. Quite a contrast from what we would find acceptable today.

Edit: I think I remember reading that the wooden caskets costs $1.87 each.

There are many reports of hauntings along Main Street in Menomonee Falls. A hair salon reported haircutting scissors jammed deeply into the side of their front desk. Water had been turned on to flood the salon. The two people with keys had been together off-site when this happened. On another occasion hair care chairs had been pushed together in the center of the room. Two stylists saw an apparition that they mistook for a customer until it vanished before their eyes. They heard sounds of a little girl laughing in a room and things would unexplainably fall and crash.

A bar owner was closing down one night and was alone in the bar. Right before his eyes he saw a bar stool slowly slide backward squeaking across the floor as if an unseen customer were pulling it out. The bartender came out from behind the bar, sat on the stool, and loudly exclaimed "You aren't going to scare me".

A handyman for several downtown buildings was working in a windowless cellar lit by a single bulb. His single shadow was cast against the wall. When he glanced up again he saw that a second silhouette of a human figure was with him in the cellar.

    Paranormal investigators tell this story:

Since spiritual beings do not possess a physical body, they must draw upon the free energy in the environment in order to manifest themselves in some way, said Noah Leigh, a lead investigator with Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee. The energy they draw upon is monitored with instruments that measure electromagnetic waves.

“There are a number of factors that may play a role in creating spiritual energy,” Leigh said. “Having a body of water nearby that flows close to buildings or underneath them, and having limestone as bedrock in an area can act as a battery to store this energy.”

Check both of those off of the list for downtown Menomonee Falls. Water flows continually over the top of Lepper Dam from Mill Pond Park, which is built of limestone. The river then flows through carving a path through the limestone bedrock.

Leigh said the quartz that is within the limestone is the key energy booster. He said quartz was once used in radio communications to transmit signals, and is utilized in a similar way in the paranormal realm. Water is also a good conductor of electricity and Leigh said they have discovered a higher level of paranormal activity occurs near bodies of water.
D.W. Steffan, an investigator with the Greater Milwaukee Paranormal Research Group, said Falls’ historic downtown buildings are also conduits of energy that spirits draw from. Old wiring emits electromagnetic energy, and often the old wiring is still within buildings and paired with updated wiring.

He said running the new and old parallel to each other in old buildings acts as an amplifier for energy emitted — similar to an old fashioned television antenna. Lastly, the tall power lines that run through downtown are also strong conduits of electromagnetic energy.

There are many reports of paranormal activity along this street. One legend is that a man was hit by a car and killed on the street long ago. The tall bearded man can be spotted at times walking down Main Street late at night murmuring to himself. He sometimes messes with the downtown clock. Some blamed him for a fire that destroyed The Honeybucket a long time ago.

Here's one from a friend of mine. They were visiting Little Bohemia and stopped to take a photo of the bullet holes in the window. If you look you can see her reflection in the window taking the photo. Her husband is standing next to her. But there is also what looks like another face over his shoulder. They were the only two people there.

The story is that there are strange "presences" in an area that was once a stage.

Strange noises are heard from there as well.

I may not have the right house because the description was pretty vague. Matters not anyway since much of the activity is reported along two roads in the area (Mary Buth and Lovers Lanes).

Some of the reports are about two shadowy figures along the roads wearing 1800s clothing. One is said to be Mary Buth. Some footsteps and shadowy figures inside the house have been reported as well. One panicky girl said that Mary Buth grabbed her by the wrists and then pulled herself through the victim leaving bruises on the wrists. Lots of sightings on the roads.

Multiple reports about how Mary Buth died. One was that she was left at the altar by a civil war soldier. Buth then got pissed and murdered some wounded soldiers (rehab) that she was caring for using an axe. Someone shot her as she did this. Another is that she was murdered by her husband in the 1920s. Another condition described is that she was from an eccentric household where she was the go-between to two brothers who lived there but did not speak. You get the idea . . . the usual ghost story stuff. The idea is to lock your doors and look out for strange apparitions on the country roads in this neighborhood. :D

Waypoint EC12 Railroad at Eagle River

A railroad worker was decapitated in a railroad mishap in the 1800s. His head flew 200 feet away from his body when it was cut off.

The ghost of the railroad worker can sometimes be seen at night along the tracks searching for his head with his old railroad lantern.

Thanks. It is kind of fun checking these places out and recounting the stories. With a little imagination, the visits can be interesting.

The building was built in the late 20's. It has been an Eagles Club, athletic club, and has a ballroom and is a music venue.

There is a door off the ballroom that leads to the dome/roof. Security has frequently investigated someone throwing things off the roof but no one is ever found.

The boiler room has a dirt floor. There is sometimes an overwhelming presence and coldness there that drives security people out. There once was a man that ran a shelter at the facility that was abusive and intolerable to the men that stayed there. He is now dead but his apparition is seen in the pool area along with cold spots.

Strange noises like shuffling feet and loud bangs can be heard in the building after hours. There is a strong feeling of negative energy in the building. The story is that there is also the ghost of a little girl here. Some employees worked in the coat check are in the basement. There are catacomb like hallways behind the coat check area. One night during a show, they head a little girl laughing in one of the rear hallways while at the same time they experienced a strong feeling of dread.

When Concordia moved from downtown Milwaukee to this location in Mequon, one of the nuns was unwilling to move. They called her Sister Sixtoes. She ended up dying near where the chapel is today.

She is said to still haunt the chapel as well as the dorms of Coburg, Catherine, and Augsburg. Students have reported seeing a ghostly figure when walking down the stairs near the chapel late at night. They also report things being moved in their rooms and lights, radios, and TVs being turned on when no one was around.
