This is my first ride report (it will be hard to read at times). First real, long, big adventure on the moto. First time my son will have seen the mountains.
He is 11.5 (12 if you ask him), and we are heading to Colorado and beyond for 3 weeks of father son time.
I like reading ride reports, so why not post my own. I am not sure how much I will update this while we are out and about, but I will try to at least upload some pics when I get service and time.

We will be on a 2015 1190R and camping along the way with some Airbnb and hotels as well. We have went moto camping before and really enjoy it.

The very rough plan to CO is to go through St Louis, see the arch, camp (Mark Twain Nat Forest), ride, camp (Black Kettle Nat Grassland), ride, camp (Cibola Nat Forest), ride to 4 corners then to Telluride where I am changing tires.
A local (inmate @MountainsandRivers) has opened his garage and allowed me to ship some fresh rubber to his house. This site is awesome, and the people on it even better (some of them)!
The goal of the trip was to ride the COBDR, and it looks like we will miss some due to fires.
The MAIN goal of the trip was to hang out with my boy before he turns into a teenager...

We will be in Crested Butte/Gunnison area for 3 nights (Airbnb) exploring and hiking and looking for mines.
Then we head to Moab for 2-3 nights. Then back to the COBDR and north.
The ride home will take us to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse, and through the badlands. Maybe to Chicago for some pizza if we have time.

Here we are today, after I had got the bike test loaded. We head out at 6am tomorrow (with a little more gear).

Those are some seriously big grins! I see a lot of pride in this pic.

Some of my best memories are traveling on the back of my fathers bike. Thanks for reminding me as Father's Day approaches.

Enjoy every minute and every mile. Keep us posted. I'll be following.

Made it to St Louis. It's hot!
There are people on motorcycles actually recording video and taking pictures on phones riding on the main street by the arch. It's pretty stupid.

Looks like a great trip. I will be in the same part of the world riding with my 7 year old this week.

Sounds like this will be a fantastic read. All the best to you and your boy. I'll be riding parts of the CO BDR to Telluride as well, then over to Moab to ride the White Rim Trail. Maybe we will cross paths.

Have a great time. Dirt bikes gave me and my sons a common interest and a better relationship through those turbulent adolescent years. They are grown with their own families now and I wouldn’t trade those riding memories for anything.
    I’ll be following your report...

    Agreed:
Same here wouldn’t trade those days for anything!
Your son will remember this trip all his life - and will have more big grins every time he remembers it.

Made it to camp early yesterday and had time to relax and cook some camp dinner, then go sit in a creek to cool off.
Riding all day in 95deg sucks!
Sleeping in a tent sucks! I wish I had room for my hammock and the tent.
We woke up late and took forever getting things packed, hoping to streamline that throughout the trip.

Anyway. Heading to camp soon and might have some sunlight left to set up the tent.

Some more campsite pics. I had an apple cobbler camp dessert and assumed it was made like the other dehydrated stuff. It was not.
Made a huge mess, but it was actually really tasty.

Now he can say he's been on RT 66! We rode about 3miles to the next on ramp. :rofl

    Breakfast/lunch was a protein bar

Dinner today is Zaxby's. We don't have these around Cinci, so when I head south I get it. Was happy to see one in Oklahoma City.

Today sucked until after we ate Zaxby's. It was 93+ all day.
Currently sitting at a nice campsite waiting for the stars to come out.

    Today's info.

Campsite at Black Kettle is pretty nice. Have to watch out for the anthills.
We got here just as the sun went down.

Woke up this morning to a nice sunrise and it's not hot! Yet...
Actually got some sleep last night. It was around 75deg all night which was wonderful.

Headed to Albuquerque and we get a short ~400ish mile day.

Rode around a bit and finally hit some gravel this morning!
The beast got squirrelly around 85 on the gravel.
Nathan wanted to check out an oil derrick and I wanted to see a windmill.
Got lucky and found some with the gates open.

Texas got boring! It was nice closer to Oklahoma. Just ate some waffle house.
This trip is a tour of waffle houses across the country...

    20180618_083840.jpg

This part was sitting on the ground so we checked it out. No idea what the actual name is but it was cool to see up close.

    20180618_084253.jpg

Nathan liked the red dirt so he got a souvenir

    20180618_092250.jpg

This was cool up close too.

Rode around in the NM desert (I guess it's a desert) for about 20mins or so just so we could say we did.
    20180618_140239.jpg

    20180618_140318.jpg
Cibola National Forest was closed due to fire risk, so, we did what any true adventurers would do and went and had some pizza and beer!
Found Kaktus Brewing in Bernalillo, NM and it was delicious. Now we have a dollar on the rafter.
    20180618_182434.jpg

Saw this big ass spider when we stopped at the closed forest entrance.
    20180618_163437.jpg

Now we are headed to Cuba, NM to look for a campsite on BLM land. Hopefully that works out. Worst case, we get a room and take a much needed shower.
We MIGHT stink. Just a little. Maybe.

If your plans bring you through the Boulder/Golden area and you need a place to stay, and perhaps a chance to knock the stink off, give us a holler...as long as we’re around we’d be happy to have you & the wee man for a night.

Love this. My oldest son is 13.5, and has out grown me by 2 inches I'm 5'10", and he's pushing 6'. He's ridden with me since he was 7, but never on any long trips. I showed him this and asked if he'd be interested in doing a trip like this, and he said we'd look silly. Like two grown men on a bike.:imaposer He said he would if we could somehow attach a sigh stating that he's my son!
