It is that time of year again to remind people that there are two large biker rallies around Durango over Labor Day weekend that may affect the plans of riders and travelers in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado.

One is the Sugar Pine Rally just north of Mancos (about 30 miles west of Durango) on 8/30-9/3 and the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally in Ignacio, (about 30 miles south of Durango) on 8/29-9/3.

This is on top of all the bicyclists, RVs, hunters, hikers, 4x4 clubs, train lovers, mushroom gatherers, hippies, campers, fishermen, dirt bikers, drunk drivers and riders and all the other normal tourists (if it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?). So, if you're coming down to the San Juan mountains for a quiet, calm and uncrowded time, be prepared. Expect lodging, restaurants and bars throughout the area to be pretty crowded. There will be rolling road block parades on the mountain roads. The weather is looking to be very nice, so the crowds will be out and about.

Between the two rallies, about 20-30k bikers come to the area for a good time. On Friday through Sunday there are usually hundreds of bikes taking over about 5-6 blocks of Main Avenue on-street downtown parking.

If you were not aware of this, factor it into any plans you might have if you are coming to SW Colorado for Labor Day weekend trips!

Have a good time, buy a local a beer and remember to tip your waitresses well!

Last week we had the lycra-clad bicycle racers and now this week the leather-clad pirates. The mean streets of Durango are very scary and not for the faint of heart! :eek1

I've been asking this question for many many years, but what I've always wondered, if there a weight or bag limit? Damn pesky critters keep trying to mate with my bulldog hood ornament, if they would only realize and respect that my 80,000 lbs has the right of way, we would all get along.

I went to Sturgis, went to Laughlin, then realized I like riding there more than being there.

A few weeks ago a rider at the Brewing Market in Lafayette, one of the regulars I always see there, saw my motorcycle jacket and asked what I was riding, I said today my BMW. I stood there a few minutes waiting for my hot pressed green chili burrito, mmm, and listened to the group of middle aged guys and a couple of Lafayette Cops chat. Then one of the guys looks at me says, "I'm going on a three week ride, stopping by a BMW MOA, there'll be 10,000 riders there". I said, "I've learned I really don't like people that much . . . but the three week ride doesn't sound all that bad". :D

:nod Back in the early 90's when we lived on the front range, we rode north into Wyoming and turned right to Sturgis a couple times. Then, we decided the same thing as you and went north and turned left instead. Life has been much better since we went that way and found the things we found.

But, everyone has to find their own way. One isn't better than the other, they are just different...

Hay... Those bikers also invade NM!

A few years ago, I made a mistake and spent a month in Farmington one night. :lol3 Apparently the straight pipe harley crowd had an all night contest to see who could set off the most car alarms in the motel parking lot.

I've been frustrated with all the construction on my commute from Durango to Mancos lately. I rode to Cortez the other day and had to sit at 6 different road construction stops for about 10 minutes each! That was about an hour just sitting there! It was almost as bad as dealing with the traffic in the DC area! Almost. :lol3
