HackyMoto - Really enjoying this report. Congratulations on the arrival of Mason! Bikes and babies are a couple of my favorite things. In my case, when a baby comes along it means no riding for a while. Gotta figure out how to remedy that....

    Thanks for sharing.

Going to be a nice day:ricky
    [IMG]

Grandma’s job yesterday when MM & I went to Bodie was to find a machine shop around here that would do the work on her engine. After numerous calls to shops friends of friends she has a place to go. We were given directions to a guys shop after driving by his place 5 or 6 times we finely spot his place he hidden from the road a ways .

We go in side to see if we could get him to do the machine work on this little engine that could. You see most people around here are retired and don’t do to much work if they can help it.
Here’s Grandma working him over he’s the one on the far right.

Here he’s starting to brake :deal
    [IMG]

    Where in
    [IMG]

I look over and see this well well well he’s a Rider I tellum I’m on this grandpa ride and my story yada yada yada know were way in there :nod
    [IMG]

He shows us his shop this is just half of it.
He’s got the machines to do all :tb
    [IMG]

WARNING MOTOR HEADS THESE NEXT PHOTOS MAY CAUSE BIG WOODYS

Polish up Rodex aluminum cylinder head nice :nod
    [IMG]

    That go’s on this :tb
    [IMG]

    With this
    [IMG]

    Toped off with this
    [IMG]

This injector hat is huge the butter fly’s are about 4in :huh
    [IMG]
The engine is going into a flat bottom speed boat running on alcohol :loco

He’s got some of these block laying around from one of the NHRA funny car guys, I guess these block are illegal for NHRA use know.

    Mores stuff.

    That’s it for know inside.
We go outside show us around his yard this rig he built for sale.
There’s a lot more to see but we been here for over an hour now time to go
With that taking care of it’s time for a ride.

Talking with some of the locals there seems to be a Hot Springs back on the far side of the valley that MotoMamma and I took yesterday sounds like an adventure, not to go over the same track again I go away from Anaconda mine, this shot you can see the road that go over to the valley.

    Going up.

    Then over.

Riding a long I come upon this sign the road tees right here not to go over the same track again I make a right towards Buckskin.

You can see Buckskin about 10mi. from here on the right.

I get there and the place is fenced off pretty good with signs that say DANGER CYANIDE KEEP OUT :eek1 :grim with little shacks very 50 feet or so along the fence line. The place look like has been shut down for quite sometime now I blow the signs.

I run into these guys and talk with um for a bit there working the tailing pits from the mine scooping up the stuff and getting it trucked off somewhere to get ore out.
They must be getting paid quit a bit to play in cyanide:uhoh
    [IMG]

One of the pits there working if you look at hills in the foreground just to the right and up of his hat that's were those pillar things are.

Leaving there I blast down Smith Valley to find the Hot Springs
Took this shot looking north from were I just came from, upper left where the shadow from the clouds are:uhhuh
    [IMG]

I’m on the west side of Smith Valley on a trail I found
Looking south east to the town of S/V upper middle.

Hay AceRph am starting to see it your way:1drink
    [IMG]

    And the XM played
    [IMG]
    http://www.youtube.com/watch#!videos=9QYHsJywptk&v=G1jpQu6qR1E

Looking around a bit I see this mess a couple of cases of empty cat food cans, can anybody tell me why this would be here? The hills around here are littered with all kinds of stuff mostly old I’m guessing from the 40s from some of the cars dumped here.

Something about there rocks in Nevada
    [IMG]

Coming back up the valley I find the Hot Springs it’s all fenced off now.

The locals said the temp of the water coming out was about 185f I dip my hand in it yep its way hot.

Coming out the side of the hill.

    Flowing under the road.

And over to a cooling pond this was all fenced off so I couldn’t get to it I was looking forward to jumping in there :cry
    [IMG]

Somebody’s built a house next to the springs and it looks like there using the spring water to heat the house.

I start to leave and this guy pulls up two donkeys and a horse I stop we talk for a bit
    [IMG]

He was testing his hook up with one of the donkeys he side that trailer was pulling to the right.

He thinking of putting the small one in the middle
Quit a rig he’s got there.

The trail to Artesia Lake that’s dried up, I didn’t go down that way as the shadows are getting long I’ll save for next time.

A road sign? Kind of funny a lone road sign in the middle of the valley Artesia & Mason pass, I came down part of Mason pass already I take Artesia / Sunrise.

    It go’s though this pass.

    And opens up.

Makes me wonder if this trail was used by wagon trains/outlaws way back then :gun1
    [IMG]
Because this trail goes to Carson City and Dayton.

Up here the intersection left to Carson right to Yerington
    I make a right.

I tell you guys this is some ride.

A couple of miles further I run into some old pavement that twist down the pass:ricky
    [IMG]

And I’m greeted to this as I come out of the pass:devildog
    [IMG]

And back to Grandmas on the right

Today I decide to check out a place I seen the on the way back from yesterdays ride and hook back up with a trail to Carson City.
Walking around to the bike I see this alien looking thing pretty good size to.

It must have flown into the building because its head was smashed in on the back side. Does anybody no what this insect is? I don’t.

    Away we go
    [IMG]

This shot you can see the road I came down the day before about 1 mile away.

Looking back were I just came from JUST FREKIN :ricky
    [IMG]

Starting to head out of the valley I start seeing more old structures.

Going down I see these big holes off the side off the road.

I go have a look see that’s about as far as I dare hang over for the pic.

That’s one big hole and who know how deep they are.
Funny thing there’s a couple of these right next to road and there on down hill off camber corners:eek1

Down alittle farther there’s this structure.

    I go investigate.

Trying to figure out how this structure works anybody know?

Leaving there I start coming out of the valley not knowing where I was going I punched in Dayton Airport because it seem the closes place out of the valley.

Looking down at HWY. 50 to the west and the outskirts of Carson City.

Looking down at the town of Dayton and Gold Hill.

    Coming out of the valley.

Funny thing as soon as I get to the airport and I see my dream plane land and taxi down the way a Velocity! And strange happenings #3 kind of strange I picked the airport as a way point :pope
    [IMG]

I hall ass across the field to catch up with it.

I find him and ask if I can check his plane out he says no problem, right on!

    He built his Velocity here.
What a beautiful piece of work and his garage/hanger o my god you could eat of the floor look at the shine :brow

We talk for a bit and I Tell him my story that this is my dream plane and the reason I got my pilots license.

Looking around his place I see a picture on the wall motorcycle trophies I ask if that’s him yes it is, seems he used to race cross country and was pretty good at it. I told him I just came from Yerington across the pass and he looked at me with that Deer looking at the headlights look and said, you road that bike over the pass? Well yes I did we laugh.

It was time to go, nice to have meet you see you later.

Looking out the hanger o to be retired.

It was starting to get late and I had to go.
Bye see you next time and thanks for the water.

Leaving Dayton I take road 2b off of 50 to Fort Churchill State Park / Weeks to get back to Yerington a nice 20 mile dirt rip to Hyw. 95.

About half way though I come up to this place out in the middle of nowhere and guess what somebody left the gate open humm...

I go in, some interesting stuff in there.
    A water pit.

There where more testing spots but I didn’t take any pix. I was to interest in the 2 mile oval track out there with banked turns! I couldn’t pass it up It was getting dark so I made a few stealth runs a round the track before somebody seen out there.

It's Hard to tell how steep the banking is from the pix.

That bug's what we called a Jerusalem Cricket when I was a kid in the bay area of California. Didn't see many of 'em there but IIRC they were freakishly large and kind of gross even by bug loving kid standards.

There was a creek that ran by the schoolyard when I was a kid that had what we called horsehair worms in it. Really skinny and a foot or two long. I'd catch 'em and put plenty in my pockets (don't know why). The JC though was never something that seemed like it needed to go in the pocket. Just a tad too much bug there.

In my youth (Northern California) we only knew them as Potato bugs. I did some searching and both names are used.

I had never heard the Jerusalem Cricket name.

As a child, I used to pit bugs in a "to the death battle" inside large jars. The potato bug was a formidable warrior, although the Praying Mantis kicked everythings butt! Even against Scorpions and Black Widows.

Yep. Potato bugs. Hadn't heard that one in a while and that's not all bad. Never caught or even saw a mantis.
