I'm looking at riding Henness Pass Rd. from SR-89 over to Verdi, and I was wondering if anyone has done that lately? I'm asking because I'll be on a KLR with Shinko 705's, which aren't exactly the most offroady of tires. Smart idea, or no? Thanks in advance!
You'll be fine. It's a bit rocky in spots, but I wouldn't hesitate to ride my 990 with 705's on that road.
Dont you still have the wheels with the TKC's on them? We rode that route from Cleveland on 49 and turned right before Verdi then went into Truckee for lunch. It was an average gravel/dirt road and a fun one. I rode it with 705's but would probably put my front wheel on with the TKC on it. Little more secure. Forest City was neat to check out.
Gave the tires to my buddy with the DR650. Still have the wheels, but they're up for sale in the FM. Gonna get a 19-incher for the front.
I did it this time of year in 2018, and I was in a 4WD... there were a few sections closest to 89 that were goopy fun where I was sliding all around in 4Hi and with mud-biased AT tires. I am pretty sure I recall specifically thinking "Damn I am glad I'm not on a KLR with 705s on it...". Most of it is just a dirt or dirt/gravel road but the few sections of mud were very, very slick.
You’ll be fine. I do it regularly (from Cleveland/mountain house rd to Verdi) on my 1978 xs650 which also happens to have 705s. 100 miles each way.
