Yea, I did what I thought was a thorough inspection, and the tire was not contacting the tank when stationary. Under the bouncing and stresses of actually dirt riding, though, the clearance wasn't enough. It was my fault that the tank got a hole. It really is a good product, just not one that I personally would use again.

Friday - Section 1 of the IDBDR

We had a bit of a leisurely breakfast after the previous nights dash in the dark I to Jarbidge. With the bikes packed we set out and we're making good time through the desert until we got hit by a lightning storm. With no place to hide we stopped in a small draw to wait it out. After a short time it seemed to be letting up so we got moving and were soon in clear skies. From there it was a long but relatively easy run into Pine. Other than fighting a serious crosswind in the desert during the storm it was a pretty uneventful day. We met the wife of the Trinity Lookout man at the saloon in Pine. She said that the storm passed through the area but they didn't get any rain in pine.

Just one picture in this update. The rest are on Dad's phone. 20190907_103436.jpg

We finished the IDBDR this morning at Porthill, ID. We're having breakfast in Creston, BC at the Retro Cafe right now. I'll post the details of the last few days tonight. We're headed for Chelan, WA today and we'll do sections 4 and 3 of the WABDR tomorrow 20190913_084055.jpg

    Another quick update:

I broke my ankle yesterday afternoon, so this trip is over. I came into some rutted moon dust too fast, dropped the back tire into a rut and low sided. The crash bar came down right on top of my ankle. I was wearing gaerne SG12 boots, which probably saved my foot and ankle from serious damage. As it is I have a "twisting injury" and I'll be having surgery on it next week sometime.

I just started wearing fullly armored, hinged MX style boots this summer. I'm glad I did, my old leather adventure boots would have done nothing to protect me from the entire weight of the bike coming down on my foot.

So now I'm sitting in a casino in Omak, WA. My mom is bringing a trailer up here to get the bike home to their place. My dad will ride the AT back. The bike is 100% fine other than some scratches, and I'll be back on it ASAP. 21675.jpg
