You guys should have bought already street legal bikes from dealers, so that you don't have to deal with complicated process.
I have a set of DOT 21" and 18" that anyone is welcome to borrow. Located in Vail CO. I found the insurance to be a lengthy process, my agent took aver a week to figure out what to charge me as KTM didn't offer a street legal 450 in 2007. That was the most "difficult" part.
Hmm, that's odd. My agent has insured multiple dirt bikes for me pretty fast-the caveat being they are all plated.
K, I am curious if anyone this season has gone down the road in Boulder or Colorado to plate their new dirt bike. The dealer can put the stuff but they seem to add on a lot of charges for something that seems relatively simple to do. Banjo bolt, Mirror, plug and play high low switch?
Trying to figure out if having the dealer plate it is worth it or if I should just buy the bike and deal with it myself.
What does the DMV charge for plating a dirt bike? I know all the criteria but just can't find the exact fee's I will be charged. Is the process really that much of a pain in the butt or is it pretty easy?
All the dealer will do is put the required equipment on. You'll still have to go through the inspection process. The only "fee" associated with plating a dirt bike is the inspection. After that it is the same as registering anything. The amount depends on the age, msrp, and whether or not you have paid the correct sales tax rate on it yet.
Sorry if this exists somewhere else, but I haven't found anything current on plating a bike in Colorado, so I'm reviving an old post.
I know and have the equipment needed to make my WR450 street legal. That doesn't seem to have changed from the recent posts here.
What is the sequence for getting the VIN inspection, titling, and registering the bike? The process is a little unclear from what I'm finding.
And if anyone knows where to go for the VIN inspection in Jefferson County, that would be appreciated too.

Just got this done on a 2006 Yamaha TTR 250 last week.
First I found out all requirements the bike needed. For mine it was DOT tires, horn, mirror, and brake light. Had everything else already. Set up appt. with CSU police(they are a verified VIN inspector). He signed all necessary paperwork, went to DMV with all paperwork and with my OHV card for this bike for proof of ownership, along with insurance card and my license and ~ $50.00 and got the plate. Title coming in the mail.
So it's as easy as that? I've lived here about a year and haven't tried plating a dirt bike yet, don't have the balls to buy a bike and try a questionable process but maybe I'll go for it
When I got my 300 plated, the local DMV charged me back registration. The fact that when I bought it, it wasn't street legal and couldn't be registered didn't matter to them. Pay 4 years of rego, to get my plate or leave.
Recently did this on my 350 XCF-W.
Your bike must have:
DOT tires (they checked)
horn (not a squeeze/clown horn) I used a $9 Amazon 9v horn
Brake Light activated by one brake (front or rear, rear is easier)
Head light/tail light
Proof of Insurance.
VIN inspection (State Patrol did mine, took <10 min)
Bill of Sale/Title
After inspection, take ppwk to DMV, pay for plate and "back road taxes" (Bullsh*t) walk out with plate
Don't forget you still need an OHV sticker, once you have a plate you apply for the OHV "permit" same $25.25 as the normal OHV sticker, just the one for street registered bikes (you can't carry dual registration on vehicles, once you have the plate you are registered as a "street" bike, the old sticker registers your bike as an off-road bike)
They didn’t charge me any tax and I had bought the bike 2 years ago from a private party. I even asked her to check the amount when she told me $50. all I paid was for the license.

Is there a cutoff on the back taxes? let's say you want to plate something like a 2000 XR650R or something else older, are they seriously going to try to get 17 years of back taxes out of you???
Good Question, I have no clue. But the taxes on my '15 were crazy high, like $600. I should have questioned that.
IIRC it's 4 years.
Hello all - I am new here and to trail riding in Colorado - On the OHV page it looks like full sized plated bikes are NOT allowed on motorized Single track but dirt bikes (plated or not) ARE... Why wouldn't i be able to take my WR250R on motorized single track trails?

The wording on the OHV area stuff is cumbersome at best. I understand that it's the other way around,... gotta have a plate on official roads, even if just to cross to the other side.
They require you to have the OHV sticker regardless of if you have a plate or not. But the bike size means nothing. I have seen a KTM990 Adventure on single track at Rampart R, now that’s something!
Fully agree. They even have special stickers for plated bikes specifically for OHV trails. I have ridden my 1150 and 690 through lots of singletrack and OHV trails and chatted with lots of park rangers. Never an issue. They are happy to see you have the OHV sticker.
