    Big ride.. yes

Expensive.. that totally depends on how you travel. I camp and dont see any difference. Gas costs more north of the lower 48 but my average daily camping costs are lower.
In the past 3 summers i have ridden to alaska twice and canada all 3. I'm very fortunate to not have time constraints which allows me to be far more flexible which in turn keeps my daily costs below what just a hotel would cost without travel.

Travel can be done from $50 a day to $500+ a day... and believe it or not.. many times the $50 a day traveler will see more :)

    Ride on!!

Or, come ride with me, and we can double that daily expenditure. Lots of Pie, French Maids, hot tubs, Godiva chocolates on the pillows :-)

I want to revive this thread now that the summer has passed.

To all the ADVer's who went to Alaska this summer, a couple of questions.

    1. On a daily basis, how many other riders did you see on the road, in towns, or gas stations?

    2. What's your best educated guess on the number of riders who made it up there in 2018?

I spent 63 days riding to Tuk and back , camping every night

I probably saw over a 1000 bikes on the roads up there

I spent all of July in Alaska and wouldn't even try to guess how many bikes I saw. Heck there were six bikes at the General Store in Prudhoe Bay when I got there lol

I have been to Alaska twice and both times I took the long way.
2012 - Trip one was the long way to the southern part of Alaska - Hyder. Started in SE Wisconsin and rode to 48 states on the way.

2015 - Second trip was a ride to Deadhorse, Alaska that included a stop in Key West, Florida. Number of riders that have completed the Iron Butt Ultimate Coast to Coast ride on a Victory - One. :-)

I have been coming and going from Juneau for 40+ years. When I started touring in the 1970's I might see half a dozen bikes a day on the Alcan. Now I am seeing 75-100 or more a day if I am traveling in the warm months. It's not uncommon to see groups of 6-10 at a time.
This summer there was 12 bikes at the Prudhoe Bay Hotel when we were there.

Took 5 weeks and rode to AK and YT in 1986. Did the Dalton, Top Of The World and Stewart-Cassiar. I only recall seeing about 10 motorcycle travelers north of the Yellowhead Highway.

Took almost 6 weeks this summer. Similar route (chickened out of doing the Dempster) and motorcycle travelers were coming out of the woodwork. Was in Dawson City just before the D2D. Everywhere I turned I saw groups of riders. Everywhere I camped, there were many other motorcyclists. I'm guessing I saw well over 1,000 riders and possibly closer to double that.

What's great is camping with a guy in his mid-70's, riding a Harley, towing a two-wheeler trailer who just came across the Top of the World. Proves that maybe I'm not nearly done yet.

    Dave, you are a bad...badd....man :-)

I have no idea how lunch was, but I know that none of us 8 riders on the road to TUK that day...ate lunch. You got hauled into TUK in the back of a police car, so you must have had an early dinner, at least. :dukegirl

At the bed and breakfast I stayed at, I was the only client as people who were planning a stay didn’t make it. I found a box of pasta and a jar of spaghetti sauce in the pantry and that was dinner...no fellow riding buddies, no whiskey, no cigars, not even my bike. 2020 will be my next attempt...But stay tuned for an abbreviated ride plan in mid August 2019.
