Seven friends and I decided to combine camping and riding our dual sports. I've been to the Rubicon a few times so I said why don't we do a loop out of my house in Tahoe and incorporate arguably the most famous 4x4 trail in the world. They agreed.

    142 miles, 2 days.

And so, the first annual Cal-Poly alumni dual sport overnight extreme enduro "are we really riding the Rubicon" camping trip was a go. Pictures to follow, with a video at the end.

The plan...? Leave North Lake Tahoe and head Northwest towards Donner pass through the old train tunnels.

From the top of Donner Pass we headed into Soda Springs for some fuel before heading south towards the Cedars and the very challenging Tevis Cup Trail, a winding single track trail down to French Meadows Reservoir.

After passing French Meadows and Hell Hole Reservoirs we continued on to Uncle Toms Cabin for a quick refreshment.

Next, we entered The Rubicon Trail via the Loon Lake damn spillway. We camped at Ellis Creek, 2 miles into the trail.

Early the next morning we started the daunting task of completing the rest of the Rubicon in one day.

We stopped at Buck Island lake for a quick bite and a swim.

After a few traffic jam delays we made it through to the observation point.

How was riding the Rubicon on the XRL? How long did it take all of you to get through including the breaks?

It took us 8 hours from Ellis Creek going east on a Sunday.

The XRL is already a big bitch. Then we add a big fuel tank and camping gear. It was a challenge, but as long as I kept it upright she kept on chuggin'.

She is an old design but still very serviceable.

I'd hate to be the guy riding with that giant pack!

We probably won't do the Rubicon again this season but definitely other rides in the area.

Looking at the pictures I thought the XRL would be a handful in the rocks.... Then I watched the video - WTF! You did a great job getting the big ol' gal through there! Thanks for posting Garrett2323.

Great report. My family goes up every summer and we stay at Tahoma. My brother and I talk about riding the Rubicon every year, but are always reluctant to do it on our big bikes. This ride report might just of been what we needed to get us going. Maybe we should start our own University of Oregon and SFSU alumni Rubicon ride. Thanks for the report, pics and video.

Epic ride and great report. At the same time I can't wait and am absolutely fine waiting to do this ride again next year.

Oh you know- first time our with the XRL and thought I better make sure I could right it before we got to the real tough stuff.

While I'm at it, let me tell you about my favorite feature of the bike. It's this little button on the left side of the handlebars. Here's a demonstration:

Awesome ride and report. I have been on most of the route and know that you guys completed a challenge especially on the big bikes. I have done the Rubicon on a KTM 450 and it was a tough workout. We went east to west and looks like you went the other way...

How was it going up Cadillac? We thought it would be tougher going up than going down.

Not bad except for the Sunday afternoon traffic. We had to pass about 30 rigs.

Nice work on the big(ger) bikes! I rode Rubicon a couple of years ago as an out and back from Homewood to Loon. 3hrs round trip, but I was on the cheater bike (200EXC). I'm not sure it would be as fun on my 525...
