You have the crappy 2017 auto decompression part. The new 2018 and 2019 cam with the revised auto decompression piece should fix this problem. The dealer may help mine did not. I ordered the cam from France. It was half the price of here in the US. After the new cam was installed it spins and starts like it should.

Hey man, so you’re saying the new style auto-decompressor will fit in my 2017 cam shaft? Or do I have to replace the cam and decompressor together? i’d rather upgrade to the newer system if it will work in my bike as opposed to just replacing it with a part that will fail again in the future.
    Thanks for the help!

you cannot replace the decompressor you have to buy the new cam which will have the new decompressor. In the parts fische it will not show the older cam any longer but some dealers may have an old one on the shelf. Make sure you don't accept the old one.

That's interesting. My engine is loud, even with a Dirt Tricks cam chain tensioner. It's like a hollow knocking sound high in the head. And on two occasions I've had it be completely silent, until I shut it off and started it again. It's very annoying to listen to. What does the noise in yours sound like?

Hi, seems that the last version of automatic cam chain tensioner with 15w60 oil is the best choice. Manual seems to be a nonsense as the engine dilatation is huge. Just watch this video from this lc4 german specialist (pirate racing)

By that, do you mean, that the engine expands a lot once up to operating temp.? Because, I believe the OEM tensioner leaves the cam chain loose all the time, hence the noise. A manual tensioner, would only be loose during warm up. For a cam chain to jump, you'd pretty much would have to take the tensioner and the slider completely out of the engine. So, I'm not worried about anything catastrophic happening.

Has anyone out there installed a manual tensioner on your 701 or even a newer 690? If so, what has your experience been. Mines a 2018 SM, about 6000 miles, wings exhaust and fuel dongle.

What fuel dongle do you have? what does it do?! I didn’t know they made one for this bike.

I think I got it from AOMC. It richens the air/fuel mixture in the low and mid revs.

What is the whirring sound caused from? And, why would it have to be at TDC? The cam chain is the same tightness, no matter where the piston is. Where you able to install it, put the exhaust back on and then adjust it?

Sorry to bring back an old post. But, could you please tell me who did your seat and graphics? This is stunning! I would like to do something similar in blue colors.

Hi, I have the orange one, and when coming back from muddy tracks, after some little drops and low sides, the colour is quite the same !:D

I installed a manual tensioner on my 2017 701 and my 2014 690. I got tired of the loud rattle at idle. It worked fine for 20,000 miles on both bikes. I now have a 2019 701 and so far it does not rattle at idle with the stock tensioner, but I only have 800 miles.

I don't think anyone makes a manual tensioner for '18 and '19 models. But, I have now been told by two other people that the Dirt Tricks unit made theirs make more noise. So, I guess I'll go back to the OEM tensioner.

Order the complete '18 Cam or tickle your local friendly dealer by making your own video showing how the decomp lobe is sticking and send it to them. I made a short vid and sent it to my dealer. They went up to bat for me with Husky North America and sweet talked them into a replacement cam. They sent me a brand new '18 complete cam. The tolerances were so good that I didn't even have to reshim.

The removal and reinstall took about an hour. A very straight forward project.

So, it doesn't appear that anyone makes a manual tensioner for our 2018 models. I could make one. Does anyone know what size bolt would thread through the tensioner hole and what size lock nut I would need? I'll get something in titanium and a blue color so it looks halfway decent.
