So there was a failure on the Dragon Failure thread?
They had to close the thread to clean up? like after an accident?
Is that like a `busa down?
    :hmmmmm

Don't know where to put this... A friend and I are headed to North Carolina from Arkansas and back this weekend/ early next week. Going to detour through the 129 Cherohala area Saturday and spend most of the day in that area Monday on the way back. See you there? Any pointers?

Go through 129 early in the am, or late in the pm, especially on the weekend.
Last weekend, the Cherohala was pretty quiet, especially for a Sunday mid day.

If you've never done 129 before, 11 miles will take a lot longer than you think. Stay in your lane. The curves are relentless and you may begin to get mentally tired. If you make a mistake, slow down and get it back together. One mistake is recoverable. The problem is one small mistake will put you off line for the next corner, which puts you further off line for the next, and so on. It's rarely the first one that gets you, it's usually the 3rd or 4th. Time wise, it's a parade on weekends from 10am-6pm.

The skyway is also longer than you might think, 60 miles from Stecoah to Tellico. Manage your speed. While it's tempting to go fast, there are a few off camber, decreasing radius turns that will bite you in the arse. And you never know when there's an RV around the next bend. The weather can be completely different in the valley and on the peaks. Sunny and warm at the bottom, cold and rainy/foggy on top.

    Agree with almost everything. :D

The Skyway isn't 60 miles long. You are including 143 all the way to 28 in Stecoah. It starts at the 143 intersection with Joyce Kilmer Road.

    • Mile 18: Santeetlah Gap with overlook at start of the Skyway
    • Mile 16: Hooper Cove picnic area
    • Mile 15: Shute Cove picnic area & vista
    • Mile 10: Spirit Ridge Trail with picnic area and ADA-compliant, paved trail through the forest to an overlook (3/10 of a mile one way)
    • Mile 9: Huckleberry Knob 2.5-mile round-trip hike to the summit of Huckleberry Knob (5,560 ft.)
    • Mile 8: Hooper Bald 1/2-mile trail to the summit (5,429 ft.), known for summer flame azalea and wildflowers
    • Mile 7: Santeetlah Overlook, highest point on the Skyway at 5,390-ft. with picnic tables
    • Mile 6: Big Junction Overlook
    • Mile 2: Stratton Ridge with picnic area, restrooms and Benton MacKaye Trail access
    • Mile 0: Unicoi Crest at Tennessee-North Carolina state line, view of the Tellico River valley
    • Mile 23: At the Tennessee line, you will continue the 23-mile drive to the end
    That totals 41 miles. :kat

Mind (and use, if necessary) the pull-offs, there are quite a few. Holding up those that want to go fast may encourage them to pass you unsafely. Don't let the photogs distract you, eyes on the road.

I said it's 60 miles from Stecoah to Tellico. Is that inaccurate? I include the far end of 143 because the I enjoy 28 from Deal's Gap to Stecoah far more than 129 down to Robbinsville.

I never measured the distance from Joyce Kilmer to 28, so it's probably accurate. I was just referring to where you said
since that part of 143 isn't the Skyway. :D
I have a house off 143 east of town, so I often run 143 to 28 to the Gap myself. It's a shame they recently dropped the speed limits down on 28 headed toward the gap like they have on 28 toward Franklin. :baldy

Sad news from Tail of the Dragon is that the future of Fontana Village is uncertain. Might not reopen.
