HyperPro doesn't make a steering damper [dampener, dampner, stabilizer] for the 1150GS. In fact, the only 1150GS damper I can find is the one by Ralle-Moto which costs around $900USD at today's exchange rates. Too spendy for me! Here's what I want to know--is there any reason I couldn't buy the HyperPro damper (with mounts) designed for the 1200GS and install it on my 1150GS? Total cost would be around $450. [Edit: Feb 15 2011--go to post 22 to see my reply to this question.] Here's are pics of the 1200GS damper as installed by another inmate-- HyperPro sells fork clamps of all different sizes so I won't have a problem connecting the damper arm to the fork. That's a ball-and-socket "helm" joint there at the end of the arm. For the telelever, the HyperPro mount clamps to the body (tube) of the damper then the mount is bolted to the telelever. Seems to me that I could simply drill a hole through my 1150 telelever and through-bolt it on. The only tricky part would be deciding where exactly to drill. Why is this a bad idea?
I think this is a fine idea, and am planning to do this on my 1150 as well, although I'll probably use an Ohlins damper. Ebay has lots of them, and as far as I can tell they are all the same except for stroke lenght. I may fab a bracket to mount body to the telelever front ball joint, but I haven't got that far in my planning yet.
Does it require for the Telelever to be pulled for drilling or simply drill the required sized hole underneath using a hand drill? Please elaborate! Thanks....
Already commented about that -- 2nd sentence of Post #1. BTW, BestRest no longer lists it on their website. Not sure why.
I wouldn't think you'd need to pull the telelever. Just jack up the front end then drill from the bottom up. But that's for the 1150. On your rig, I think it's a straight bolt-on deal. I'm sure if you contacted Klaus at EPM he could e-mail you a pdf with the 1200GS installation instructions.
Yes!! Sounds great! Fab one for me too. PM me with your PayPal address. Really, I'm not kidding! In fact, I bet between the Oilhead forum and the Hacks forum we could find 10 guys who'd buy one.
Your link is to the 1200GS damper. The 1150 damper is gone from the BestRest website though it was there a couple of weeks ago. However the Ralle-Moto 1150 damper can be ordered directly from Ralle-Moto for around $900USD. Link HERE.
Sounds like a good creative idea to me too. The only things I'd take a close look at would be 1.) Does the ball and socket joint swivel enough for the full range of motion of the suspension? 2.) The telelever has to handle a fair bit of force - wouldn't want to drill any holes in places where if would compromise its structural integrity.
1.)The fork tube and the telelever move in unison with each other. The helm joint needs a very small range of motion to handle the suspension movement. The back-and-forth steering movement is the bigger challenge. 2.) True dat. That was really what I was asking about in Post #1. But RD1900's idea of using a bracket secured by the pivot joint would get around that problem.
Looking a bit closer, there is a stud with a washer and nut on top of the telelever arm at the fork joint. Replacing this washer with a bracket for the damper body mount should be easy. A fork tube clamp can mount the damper piston to the fork (standard method). I think I'll mock up a washer replacement bracket with damper mount that also incorporates a steering stop protector (a la Touratech)
Now you're getting fancy! If you do that, there'll be a bunch of TT hard parts showing up in the Flea Market (including mine!)
Sorry if I missed a point. If it s for a reason of handlebar shaking, the hack is then not properly aligned... Ara & Spirit
