They also made a 540 wagon-find one and put a Dinan supercharger kit if zero to sixty in 6.5 is too slow. And that's with a very tall rear gear. All us 540it's were automatic.

OMG! My uncle had one of those when I was in high school-- complete with aftermarket alloy wheels.

I had the Dasher hatchback; lots of room, but it didn't have the power to pull a sick whore off a pisspot.

    I'm a station wagon convert.

My wife and I still own this car in Germany.

2007 Skoda Octavia. The build quality on this car is amazing.

Here she is the day we picked her up.

I just had a deer take out our '01 525i 5 speed wagon. It was still running well at 160k miles but starting to show it's age. Nice, comfortable, and fun to drive w/ a lot of features (heated steering wheels are almost as nice as heated seats). The 5 wagons are a little big and heavy - still got better than 21 mpg around town though.

We replaced it with an '01 325xi 5 speed. This one is in really nice shape w/ only 60k miles. Quite a bit smaller than the 5, still fun to drive, a few less gadgets, the sport package seats are v. nice (manual adjustment though), and having all wheel drive is great (all 2 wheel drive BMW's are terrible in snow). Gets about the same gas milage as the 5 did.

"deep down in the repressed psyches of these wagons, they all wish they were a Chevy truck." Neither one of these two wagons has a clue WTF you are talking about.

Interior space of an SUV with the mileage of a car (30 mpg mixed driving on the 325iT) and much cheaper insurance. I have always had a thing for wagons.....and I will drive these till they are dead....matched pair of silver and grey leather 2003's....a 525iT and 325iT.....too bad there isn't just one more series of them out there or I'd get another one...

    Dang,

we've been looking for a 5-spd '00-'02 3 series wagon for a couple months now, all we've found is salvage titled rigs.

I found the 3-series to be MUCH more fun to drive than the 5s - they feel much sportier with their lighter weight/tighter track.

I owned a '59 Rambler American 2-DR wagon. It was green and loads of fun. The thing was built incredibly well and super reliable in all conditions. Mine didn't look quite this good but you get the idea...

    Blame MaddBrit"

I found an '05 X3 2.5 6 speed for my dad at at Sterling BMW. Very nice shape, 40k mi., black/black, only a couple of options. $17,000 out the door (incl. all taxes, tags, fees)

My bambied '01 525i 5 speed wagon was in the Washington Post classified. OK shape, 140k mi., all records, blue/ tan, lots of options. $8800.

The new to me '01 325xi 5 speed wagon was on the New York city craigslist. Just happened to see it a couple of hours after it was posted. Very nice shape, BMWCCA member owned (Zymoled to death), red/tan, sport package, heated seats, 60k mi. $13,250.

All these were in the last 2 years.

    Also a non BMW wagon:

At the local P car dealer - an '01 Porsche Boxster 5 speed, very nice shape, all records, heated seats, leather, cruise, blue/tan, 39k mi., with a 4 year/100k mi. drivetrain warranty (took a lot of the horror story engine failure worry out of it). $15,250 out the door.

So the cars we want are out there but you have to actively keep looking - even in some unlikely places.

If you don't already know - Goggle "searchtempest" which lets you search multiple craigslist cities.

PS - There are a couple of 3 series 5 speed wagons on Autotrader now see:
