I dropped my son off at school this morning and was behind a 2010ish V50 AWD. I guess there is an R version with a 6 speed and 230 HP. Seems like a pretty nice ride for about $6K used. If my Sportcross ever dies I may have to look into one.

Those look nice..but the interiors are pretty bland and do not appear to be high in the luxury dept......
99.9% of the time you're in it and driving it...the interior..to me should be comfortable and offer good amenities and use quality materials...the V50 looks plasticy...

My Mother had a 2008 v50 T5 with a 6spd. When it came time for her to stop driving, I was trying to decide whether to adopt it or sell it. I drove it for a month trying to decide because it was a free Volvo with 60k km. Seems a no brainer, right?

The thing was, the shift linkage was terrible- it would hang up any time you tried to shift quickly. Between that and that throttle by wire, I just could not drive it smoothly. Drove me nuts, I have driven stick for 35 years - everything from motorcycles to heavy duty trucks with crashboxes to off road snow machines and I pride myself on being smooth.

In the end I sold it for her. I probably would have kept it if it had the auto, and I have never said that about another car.

Worked on the new to me V70 today. I replaced the front struts, inspected the undercarriage and changed the oil. 20 years and 273k and the struts were original. The lower control arm bushings and ball joints are completely gone, those will be replaced soon. Rear struts will be replaced soon as well. Looks pretty darn good under there considering the age and mileage.

I had a shiny black '62 544 in high school in 1968, a trade-in at my uncle's Volvo dealership in Nyack NY. It served me well, especially with four bias-ply snow tires to get to ski slopes in the Poconos, back when snow was snow and men were men. One night returning home from skiing I crawled under and reattached the front end of the drive shaft in the snow on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I impressed my other teen passengers with that! Alas, the dash caught fire from a faulty heater fan switch when my brother had it, and off to the salvage yard it went.

If you do a search on vintage Volvo 544 magazine ads, you'll see that 544s were often marketed with photos or drawings of pretty women, a tack Volvo abandoned since.

Did anyone make it to Carlisle Import & Performance Show yesterday? More vintage Swedish Iron - Volvos and Saabs - than you could count...plus parts.

Well, if you insist. I was there on Friday only; Saturday was the big day. I imagine the Volvo and Saab clubs have lots of photos. I only took photos of a 9000 Aero I salivated over (I owned two, wonderful 9000s though my mechanic thought they were a PITA) and of a Yugo for a laugh.
