I was looking for this photo...

Taken at the Sierra Soire... I think 2003? I thought I was pretty badass, I had my R1150GS/Adv with TKCs mounted. I had been on lots of fire roads and dual track and felt pretty good about my riding skills, considering that the GS was my first "dirt bike".

I didn't know anyone at the Sierra Soire, I had read about it on some relatively new and small board called Adventure Rider and decided to check out my first AdvRider event (I think the Sierra Soire was one of the first real AdvRider events).

Most of my riding had been solo up until that point so I really did not know what to expect and did not know how to rate my skills. I found a group to ride with on the Saturday and went for it.

At the Saturday night dinner I ended up talking to Jean-Luc, Ricky Kuhn and Capt Ron and MotorMike (among others) and in that conversation I ended up part of their Sunday "hard" ride. Saturday had been a lot of fun and there was nothing on it that I couldn't handle. Challenging... but loads of fun! As I waited in the parking lot for the others to arrive I found myself a bit nervous... this was a "hard" ride. I could handle it... right? Hmmmm...

When Jean-Luc arrive on his V-Strom with street tires and fell over in the parking lot I felt MUCH better!! (This was before I knew the proper edicate of photgraphing all tip overs and crashes) Little did I know what was in store.

In the first photo you will notice the Aerostich Roadcrafter one piece suit.... every time we stopped and I lowered my arms sweat would literally pour our the ends of the sleaves. And the Arai Quantum that felt as if it shrank two sizes as the day went on. I had never seen rocks like this before. I had never used my bash plate before. I had never used crash bars as hand holds to pull bikes up rocks before. I had never had (real) dirt bikers stare, mouths open in awe, as I rode by before. Prior to this ride, I would have said the trail was not possible on a bike... let alone a BIG bike! Oh man, I was hooked.

A few more from the Sunday ride:

Yeah, that's right, V-Strom with street tires:

Uh huh, you got it. That is indeed a home made dual-sported RS:

That weekend literally changed my life.

It's not the years, it's the miles! Or is it the other way around? Carry on.
