So Trip and I stayed up chatting and BSing :freaky about this that and the other to the wee hours of the morning. As a result, I woke up feeling a little less then stellar. But I learned an important lesson early in the trip. When first arriving somewhere, always ask for a big glass of water before having the first beer :deal :D

A big thank you to Trip for having me for the night. :wave Trip. I really appreciate it man. Dinner was great. Great seeing you...it was a great visit. :deal

I adjusted the preload a little more and tensioned the chain (foreshadowing :deal)... Drank as much water as I could hold since I knew the hydrating would be the major battle of the day. So, I am off...

It's neat to see the flora and fauna along the way. This is a semi-rare species of Elk found in Texas: plasticus elkus or it could be fiberglasicus elkus but you can only tell the difference in a necropsy. You can see that the rut has begun because of the vegetation in the antlers.

    Heading into west Texas.

The belly full of water had been absorbed so it was time for some breakfast. Shogs is a bad influence. Though I did discover that SlimJims can be eaten on the bike. Just shove them up the front of your helmet like a CamelBak. :lol3
    [IMG]

hung with the boys for a while, but they weren't goning fast enough... I've got places to go. :ricky
    [IMG]

    West Texas...

    toasty...

    toasty I say...

Texas rest stops are call Safety Stopping Areas or Safety Rest Areas...something like that. :deal Anyway, it was amusing to see this sign in the landscaping around the "Safety Rest Area" building :D

    Well, crap...

guess that soaked someone is gonna be me...:lol3
    [IMG]

the camera went away during the storm. It was a pretty good one. The temps went from 105deg to 64 in about 10 miles. I had the grip heaters on full-bore and my ass sitting on the Left rear box to compensate for the crosswind. It was pretty cool...in a cold kinda way:vardy

Things dried out around New Mexico...

    New Mexico is straight...

    more storms...

So, I arrive at hoogavin's house safely... He offered me a beer, but I knew better :deal

Let me have a beer and a big glass of water please :D

I just finished portions of the ALCAN route and can recommend the following accomodations / services should you opt to wonder after the event.
    Good luck guys! :thumb

    Whitehorse:
    Beez Kneez
    408 Hoge Street
    Whitehorse, Yukon
    867-456-2333
    http://www.bzkneez.com/
Hostel with laundry facilities, short walking distance to downtown, wireless link
Make an advance reservation to secure a common ADV Rider room.

    Klondike Rib & Salmon Barbecue
    2116 2nd Ave, Whitehorse, Yukon
    (867) 667-7554
THE place to eat in Whitehorse.
Always a line, parties of five or more can call to make reservations.
10% off coupon available at hostel. (Dona and Trevor also own the restaurant)

    Dawson City:
Though a significant town (and my favorite) Dawson City has limited mechanical services. If you have mechanical needs go to the Dawson City R.V. Park & Campground, located 3 kms out of town just over the steel bridge and find the Indian maintenance man named Wakia-toh or commonly called, "Blue". Tell him Lou referred you and you'll have a vast array of tools and tire machine at your disposal.

The coffee shop in the middle of 1st Ave. (Main street) opens early and offers a great breakfast. The fish-n-chips place at the end of 1st. Ave is great for dinner.

Diamond Tooth Gerties is an authentic 1890s saloon offering gambling and 8 - 10:30 - midnight Can-Can shows.

    Fairbanks:
    Billie's Backpackers Hostel
    2895 Mack Blvd.
    Fairbanks, Alaska 99709-4006
    907-479-2034

Tell Billie that Lou sends a big HUG. (Ask her if the plumb bob on her porch is helping ... she'll understand.) She allowed me to store my bike in the garage and change oil / perform maintenance.

She lost her son in Iraq days before he was scheduled to come home.
Don't mention her son, just open your arms and give her HUGE hugs.

Trails End BMW is located at the end of Billie's street.
George Rahn offers high end motorcycle services.
    907-479-2367

    The Turtle Club
    10 Mile Old Steese Hwy
    Fox, AK 99707
    907-457-3883
    http://www.alaskanturtle.com/

A quick 10 minute roll north of Fairbanks.
Best. Prime. Rib. to be found on the planet!
    Call to make a reservation.

    Hot Licks Ice Cream
    3453 College Ave.
A few blocks from the hostel
Premium small batch ice cream for those needing a fix. :D

    Anchorage:
    Anchorage Guest House
    2001 Hillcrest Drive
    Anchorage, AK 99517
    907-274-0408
Owner Andy Baker plays alot of music gigs locally. I went to sleep listening to him and a friend practice. The kitchen is well stocked with health foods, you're welcome to everything. Laundry available. Very clean.

I'd recommend the following shopping: (Don't forget the support team members guys!!!)

Alaska Raw Fur Co. (Biggest selection of tanned fur products in AK)
    4106 Boat St.
    Fairbanks, AK
    907-479-2462
I quite literally froze in my tracks on the way in the door. Ace will be able to live out his benign Daniel Boone fantasies here. :lol3 I scored a pair of crystal fox booties for the missus.

    Qiviut (Musk ox producers co-operative)
    604 H Street
    Anchorage, AK
    907-272-9225
    www.qiviut.com
High end musk ox headbands, scarves, etc.
The signed picture by the creater insures authenticity.

You will encounter significant road construction throughout the Yukon and Alaska. Bikes go to the front of the line.

Buy a $5. phone card as soon as you get north as cell phone coverage is virtually non-existent.

Although the rules state a 140 mile distance between gas stops it 370 kms from the bottom of the Dempster to Eagle Plains.

Thanks again to John and Becky for hosting me in Albequerque. it was great spending the evening and morning chatting with you. Thanks for the cool ride recommends. They turned out GREAT!!! :clap If your are ever in my neck of the woods :deal

As I mentioned in the last post, I tensioned my chain when I left Trip's house. At my last gas stop, I checked things out and the chain was really, really loose, as the adjusters took 10 full revolutions to bring it back into adjustmemt. It was in its final miles... with 130 miles to make it to hoogavin's :deal

Anyway, woke up with the mission of getting a new chain installed. There is a new chain and sprockets waiting for me in Seattle, but there still just a little ways to go before that :lol3

Since I was gonna be around for a bit, I called Jurgen to see if we could meet up... We decided to meet at the motorcycle shop... make that the first shop :deal They (name forgotten) couldn't fit me in at all, nor seemed interested... Jurgen called another shop and asked for "Gordy's daughter" :lol3 Thanks Kelly :wave

The shop manager mentioned that the cogs were pretty well worn on the bike and they did not stock them. I figured as much and seeing that I had cogs and chain waiting in Seattle, I asked for a 2000 mile chain. :deal Ilmostro would be so proud :D The bike was slipped into the schedule and Jurgen and I were off on the town...

    First piece of business...Breakfast

and Me at the Ranch Cafe

and the both of us :lol3
    [IMG]

Jurgen was off of work and so he suggested that we go ADV crazy... All the great opportunities around ABQ :deal Since my bike was in the shop, I rode bitch at Target :D Sorry the picture is blurry, we were moving... :ricky
    [IMG]

After about an hour, we stopped at a scenic rest area and lounged around a bit, talking about life...

After any great adventure, there is always clean up :augie
    [IMG]

The shop called and my bike was ready. We were pretty spent from our day, so we headed down to pick it up... :wave Bye Jurgen. Thanks for a great afternoon. It was a blast hangin' with ya. See ya down the road. If you ever make it to my neck of the woods :deal

So, back at hoogavin's and loaded up... Departure from ABQ 3:30pm :bluduh Not gonna make Vegas tonight... Where could I go :scratch

Go North young man, Go North... Durango, HO!!! in search of FatChance :D

Headed North the view from AQB
    [IMG]

Wide open vistas.... great views :clap

    Barn, 'cause there's rules
    [IMG]

    Almost to Durango...

So, I arrive in Durango :clap No Cell coverage :bluduh

So I find a pay phone and call FatChance... no answer, I leave a message... I try to check my messages, but apparently don't know my voicemail password:baldy My phone knows it :dunno

I know exactly what has happen. FatChance and crew got to drinking earlier than planned and left me a voicemail telling me where to meet them... only I can't get the voice mail.

    ADV to the Rescue!!!

The booth, a key player in the evening...

So, I call DataWife on the payphone and have her log onto ADV. WE post in Jo Momma a "Help in Durango" thread looking for FatChance/FIST/Wayne Weber cell numbers...

After a little sorting through the additional information that you get in any Jo Momma thread :lol3 The Fist PM's some numbers. He plays operator land line on one ear and cell phone on the other, he calls FatChance who has gone home. Gets Wayne Weber's numbers from FatChance and calls Wayne. Finds out what bar Wayne and Kelly are in and gives me directions. :deal Quite the event :lol3 Thanks Will.

Look who I found on vacation
    [IMG]

I get into more Durango appropriate clothing and we head out to find me some dinner... Had a great eveing hanging with the Webers. Thanks for everything guys. Great seeing Ya :deal
