I just spent the past week, off and on, reading this ride report and I gotta say that it was excellent. Your trip was incredible and I hope to do something similar before I have some kids in the nest.

Thank you for taking the time to write all of this up, I have done 3 day reports and those take quite a while, so I have much appreciation for your 47 day one.

    :clap

    well apparently I lied...

My crash in Canada was a little harder than I thought...

and the shock spring issue was a little worse than I thought too....

Best I can figure (with the help of Ilmostro) is this is the result of the bike being too lightly sprung, chain tension issues (too tight), and perhaps too much travel length on the shock :scratch...

    Pretty neat eh?

    Anyone else have theories?

Can't tell from the shot, but I'm assuming that's the underside of the swingarm. That kind of wear could come from a heavy load combined with a too tight chain tension when compressed.

Anyone with a KTM has their chain so loose it looks like it's ready to jump ship, but that's the tension that bike needs to allow for travel.

Edit: Just remembered that a KLR is left side chain, so it is the underside.

    Nice job, Jay. :thumb

    yep, underside....

    :thumb Thanks...

There was about 1/2" of chain lube build up on the thing, so it hadn't hit in a while...

maybe that explains some gas mileage issues I was having :lol3

An extraordinary report - intelligent and humorous (well OK we spell different up here).

Thanks very much for taking the time. Definitely an education for KLR owners.

You handled that fall perfectly. Even a 10 from the Russian judge for that one...:eek1

Too bad about that high priced Works shock. But first place. What a score!

Why is this not a five star thread? Hard not to compare that eroded swingarm back in your MS garage to that basketful of Ks on the support trailer up in AK. Maybe names are being witheld so as not to hurt their mother, Mrs. Katoom. But then that KLR would not have made it were it not for your foresight and the ADV network either...

The better rider won, and isn't that what it's really about?

Nicely done man. And major chops to the missus. You are a lucky man.

    :bow :clap :bow

Great report, I was thinking of buying a KLR, after reading your story I am for sure. It looks like a strong bike. Good luck on your next adv.
