Hey central folks, I asked this in the "east" forum, but perhaps it makes better sense here.

I'm riding from NY to Colorado next weekend, and figure the two best choices are either pretty much I70 or I80 the whole way. Any opinions on which is the better route, major construction problems, hazards, etc? Thanks much.

I cannot comment on I80, but I have done I70 to Colorado from Kansas City. It was a long boring ride. If I had done it earlier than October, I probably would have taken the northern route just for the scenery in northern Colorado.

    Don't know if this helps,

    Dave

Thank you, sir. Every little bit helps. I also just discovered this thread. 160 looks interesting as well.

Ask Flug. He gunned it on I70 from NY for his 2004 Ouray Foray.

Maybe he'll chime in when he takes a break from posting pictures of his gay chopper rider buddies. :lol3

kdog, if you have the time, try and stay off I-70. IMHO it sucks.

you can make it fun on the back roads!!

If you have to run one or the other, I would suggest taking 70 to Indianapolis, catch 74 to Urbana, 72 from there to the Missouri border, where it turns into US36 at Hannibal. 36 runs straight to Denver. It joins I-70 about 40 miles east of Denver. I-70 through Missouri sucks, as does the part through Kansas. I-72 is little used and very good road, as in good surface. It is still straight and boring, just no pot holes and little truck traffic.

Ditto on Pilots message- take 36 across instead of 70 or 80. you get away from all the big rigs and the traffic on 36 is very minimal.

Across Pennsylvania, would say that 80 is better than 76/70 -- wider, newer and faster. Beyond that, I defer to the responses given above.

Lots of construction on the bridges crossing 80 in PA right now. I did it last week.

Thanks guys! Looks like 36 it is. You guys rock. :drums

Dizave, good point. I remember the bridge construction in PA on I80 last year when I rode out from CA. That was at night, so the impact was minimal. But this time I'll be hitting it during the day, and it could get sucky. It might be time to investigate 78/74 through PA. Anybody have any comments about that?

I can attest to 80 from Chicago to SLC being one of the most boring drives I've ever done. Second only to the crappy turnpikes in OK, but probably because every time I've been through there I've run into officer Friendly.

Although once you hit UT the scenery and road DOES get nice.

I guess driving anywhere through the midwest sucks, almost as much as living here.

80 vs 70 through CO, I'd take 70. However, If I had some time I'd do exactly what pilot said cuz he knows everything. :1drink

Now don't go accusing me of being smart or anything. I didn't spend twenty five years on the fire department so I could actually DO something. I mean other than checkers and stuff. :D

Thanks for the endorsement, Doc. :thumb

I'm definitely going to use Pilot's route for one of the legs. I actually have 3 days to get out there (Sat, Sun, most of Mon.) So I may take 'Freak's southern route on the way out. On the way back, I'm going to be pressed for time, so I'll probably use Pilot's route for that.

Is this place great, or what. :deal

Don't worry, Pilot. I'll vouch for you!

Pilot doesn't know anything and certainly is not smart in any way, shape, or form, OK?

    There, how was that, Pilot?
