To be fair, 3 different bikes in the pic, 4 on the ride, all different tires. Mine is the Best and Most Beautiful Bike of All, on the far right, sporting the Mitas e07 tires. They are the best compromise tire I've found so far, including dunlops, Mefo, etc. Not the best at anything, but very good compromise for that bike and my particular use- 50/50 ish.

Most of the IDBDR is gravel over hardpack, my least favorite surface (with the except maybe deep mud or sand. Maybe it's a tie.) and most tires kinda suck on that surface anyway. Sure, I'd have been better off with a big Motoz on the back, but for our ride, at least half the mileage was on pavement returning to our truck.

Fabless' 690 with a trials tire would have been nice on the rocky uphill to the lookout, but that was a small section.

A few of us will be riding the IDBDR next week. Any suggestion on the best route to Jarbidge from SLC? It's a bit of a stretch, not sure if we should trailer or ride. We'll have half a day to make the push. Also, any reports of fires along the route?

Just stumbled onto this RR. I love seeing the big bikes out exploring. Lolo and McGruder are on my list big time! Those KTM's seem perfect for that trip. Great photos too. Thanks for posting!

Vstroms can do it too. We did it north to south 3rd week in September. Still burning in some places. Camped most days. There's a great RV/Brew Pub on the north side of Wallace.

Incredible ride and RR. A couple of questions if possible:
    Longest distance between fuel stops?
    Highest/lowest lodging cost?
    Longest distance between lodging?
Did you have to make reservations or was the vacancy signs normally lit?

I'm planning a similar ride. I live in Northern Nevada and will be taking me 16 year old son, him riding his own bike. We're planning on doing it with pure dirt bikes made street legal but we need an idea of how much fuel to carry.
    Again, excellent ride.
    Thanks in advance.

I'd encourage you to buy the map- you'll need it anyway, and it answers most of your questions. We tried to schedule our hotel stops in advance, and were sometimes successful. Other times, we'd have a delay or something and have to wing it.

The best travel photography I've seen on ADV. I appreciate how much work it is to tell a story like this the way you have ... A superlative job.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

My 690 now has the crash bars from Rally Raid. Liz and John Mitchinson at RR have just been awesome, excellent customer service, and if I EVER need a part I will contact them first. Really impressed with their attention and support on my bike build.

Oh, do I long for Idaho. I lived in Mountain Home for 8 years and that is the best dual sport riding there is. I had a 640 Adventure and usually rode with two 950 adventures.
