So, apologize not sure where this post go, but figured it would be an interesting post.

I mean, they make a lot of these liter bikes at under 400lbs....and they are obviously fast and torquey...in a way as a ADV bike. I never understood if they have the technology to make a gsxr weigh 380 lbs why cant they make something under 450lbs that is a big bore like that?

adding the extra weight...say for extra materials like suspension length, extra casings etc

If you look at it this way, why sport cars (sport bikes) are so much lighter than 4wd pickup trucks (ADV bikes)
Just a guess. Can't use aluminium frame on ADV bike and expect it to last. Cast wheels vs. Steel wheels which are heavier. Tube tires are heavier than tubless.

Actually, they kind of do, just make sure you're comparing proper weights, i.e. wet vs dry, luggage, etc. For example, the fabled T700 is about 450 lbs wet , the BMW R1200GS is around 490lbs etc. KTM probably has a few lightweights too. Look towards enduro's (WR250, CRF250, DRZ400 etc) to get into the low 300's.

But then start to add the stuff we need to haul crap (sidecases, racks), protection (crash bars) and you add pounds very quickly. Then add luggage.

Because they don't have to; people buy them anyway.

So they don't bend and break when you use them as designed to.

If they were light, people wouldn't be able to post pictures of them buried two feet deep in ridiculous mudholes.

Have you ever seen the aftermath of a modern sportbike taking a tumble? They end up totaled almost every time with wheels broken, frames tweeked, & forks bent. It's all rather ugly. There are not designed to take abuse.
