One of the best and most breath taking stops was the Garden of the Gods. It is a unique place where you can go anywhere you want. Risk your life climbing! It is rare to have a park like this. We walked around and I was in awe most the time there. I have come to the conclusion that Illinois tourism sucks. In most cases where there is something as breath taking as this there are fudge stores, novelty shops and tons of retail cashing in on the tourism industry. But Illinois does such a good job promoting its tourism that you can't even find a tourist in these parks. I think we saw like 4 cars there. And here is an area of our state that could use that income. Anyway this is a place you have to see!

After the Garden of the Gods we stopped by this old iron ore furnace. Build a fire in the bottom fill the top with rocks and get Iron....... amazing. Who falls asleep at night thinking about stuff like this?
    I love old stuff!

Next up was Cave in Rock. The old river boat pirates lair. I have to say this was a welcome stop. It was yet another 90 degree day and being in the cave was the best feeling! Naturally air conditioned we took our time here. We did not find any treasure :(:

Dolan lake was our stop for the night. Turned out to be another great camping spot. We had dinner across the lake in a restaurant right on the lake. You can see it in the distance.

We set out the next morning and came to a dirt road. You have to love a road whose bridge runs under the water.

Along the way we found this place, I was not sure if it was a tavern as mentioned or a brothel. Or well maybe both since they went together during that era? Either way, strange who preserved it! I thought women hated guys going to taverns?

As we left this area we headed towards Rhinos section of bridges. We did not photograph every bridge but we did stop and admire them. I think we saw something like 15 of his old iron bridges. We also took in two more covered bridges. How could we possibly skip them right? They are rare here in Illinois. First up Thompson Bridge.
