It felt weird leaving the house without my camera to go on a bike ride. The last visit to the dunes finished off my Canon and I wasn't about to kill my new Fuji after two weeks of ownership.

Javalina came to the rescue with his day-old Canon D10, a waterproof camera that would not succomb to the harsh environment of the dunes.

Javalina picked me up at 4:45 AM to depart for California. I'm happy, even at this hour!

Bikes loaded and ready to go.

We stopped in Yuma, AZ for some....McDonalds!!

    Javalina humors me.

It was so, so, cold that we stopped at Target to pick up some sweatshirts.

All fueled up, only 20 miles left until we reach the DUNES!

WE ARE THERE!! Let the unloading commence!

Bikes on the ground, Javalina's 450R starts after a couple of kicks. The starter on my 450X is slowly grinding the battery down as it refuses to fire up. Perhaps a pull will get it going??

7000 pound truck pulls 260 pound bike, through the sand, for 10 minutes. Still, the 450X would not start. Break out the tools. Remove seat and tank. Problem found!!! I guess this wire should go somewhere! Reconnected, the bike fires right up!

I tend to crash alot in the sand. This was my first big one. Soft patch, over the bars, wind knocked out of me. Ouch!

From here, we made our way back to the truck and refueled. Then rode out for another loop. This time we made our way over to Gordon Wells.

Found an information kiosk at the end of the "Sand Drags". The pamphlet said "Do not put weiner in the holes".

We goofed around a bit and made our way back to the truck again. We were only getting about 15 MPG, WFO all the time.

Javalina was trying out his timer and tripod.

After filling our tanks, we hit the sand once more. Each time out was more riding and less pictures. I was pretty worn out and was having a hard time keeping the front tire on top of the sand. We did a lot of this in the soft powdery sand.

Looks like you boys are having a great day riding the dunes.

I have wanted to try this as I am real skeered of the sand. Looks soft - sort of.

    Roger the holes. Splinters :eek1

    Thanks for taking us along.

Reminds me of all the riding I did out there in high school.

Here I am at the bottom of the big hill on my KTM 540 DXC (2-stroke!)

    Glamis... What a blast! :D

Allways a fun ride from Patton valley to the Glamis store straight thru the center catching China wall and Olds on the way.

Looks like you had a fresh wind for some trackless dunes when you were there.
