Remember the good old days when the Dakar thread was impossible to keep up with. At times posts would come in faster than you could read them, even when you spent the whole day in that thread. It's still a challenge, but things have cooled down a bit since the high point of 2013. Here are the top threads in the racing forum in order of post count, all happen to be Dakar related. Remember, the vast majority of posts in the top threads happened over a short 2-3 week period surrounding the rally, not a year or many years like other top threads on ADV. There's a lot of rally passion in here!

Set the DAKARISTA's and f5 devotees freeeeee...!

Welcome friends and rally enthusiasts from the world over... ADVRider has a long tradition since more that 10 years back of being one of the most supportive and frequently visited sites for information, feedback and real time enthusiasm for the annual DAKAR rally... as HOGWILD's above (and very apt) opening post pays homage to.

So f5olks please - from here on in, we will celebrate all that has to do with the DAKAR 2018 pre-event warm up here in this stickied thread... and leave the bivouac thread for general stuff - when the DAKAR crescendo falls in late January.

BC and Pyndon's threads are still open for business as usual... so please support our inmate participants as they prepare the final weeks for the big one!

When the time comes, the Official 2018 DAKAR event coverage thread will open (on the first day of competition), in the meantime... toss your interesting information, speculation, documentation or revelations up here for all to enjoy... :thumbup

    Thanks.

    TSC.

This should be viewed in a larger context than just numbers. Game has changed on both ends.
ASO stepped up their media coverage (or is it domination?) so that information, glossy pictures and video are available almost in real time.
Most of the big teams carry media crews with them, and almost everybody else pushes constant updates through Facebook etc. to their immediate audience.
France TV has been a big change in the past few years. Very solid coverage despite language barrier.

On the receiving end, it's been stated before that F5 asylum wing has matured and got educated over the years.
Presence of a serious and liked USA competitor is always a big driver of traffic over here. Unfortunately, wealthiest and very populous nation isn't adequately represented.
Some people that used to contribute to the discussion are no longer with us in a very definite and symbolic sense.

The 2018 Dakar Rally roars into life in January and only the most intrepid offroad racers have signed up for the challenge. Among the fearless competitors taking on the world’s toughest rally are the Red Bull Desert Wings squad. Across all four categories there’s a courageous mix of past champions and rally-raid rookies preparing to push themselves to the limit in South America. Watch Damn Fine Media’s animation below to get to know these legends of the dust....

Enduro21.com knows that Jonathan Barragan will ride a GasGas Dakar prototype this upcoming Dakar. Competitors list seems to agree:
    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2018/fr/pilote/060.html
As GasGas does not currently have any four-stroke engines in their product portfolio is there any information about the bike? Maybe even some pics from Le Havre? ;). I do not think it makes sense to race their old JV kit based Yamaha-engined bike again - unless there is some much bigger plan for the future...

As for the rest, from Gas Gas there have been no announcements that have made major changes to its commercial EC 450 Raid with which for example Jonathan Barragán will compete.

Jonathan Barragan will switch to rally and is scheduled to start the Dakar Rally with Gas Gas’ prototype rally bike next January.

Here are the 23 bike entrants I know or suspect are racing malle moto, or "original by Motul" as the A$O now calls it. Apparently there are officially 28 of them including quads.

    48 Jurgen Van Den Goorbergh
    51 Hans-Jos Liefhebber
    71 Santiago Alberto Ontiveros (?)
    80 Laurent Lazard (?)
    84 Patrice Carillon
    85 Nicolas Billaud
    86 Julian Jose Garcia Merino
    87 Stephane Gourlia
    88 Jan Vesely
    93 Maciej Berdysz
    95 Juan Agustin Rojo
    97 Scott Britnell
    100 Lyndon Poskitt

Among the 28 participants, there are eight South American representatives, who will do it in Moto as in Quad as it is the case of the Argentines Alejandro Gil Mercado, Sebastián Urquía, Juan Rojo and Carlos Verza. Representing Uruguay will be Laurent Lazard and Álvaro Coppola.
Danny Nogales Copa will be local when the competition arrives in Bolivia and will feel the support of the Bolivian people who year after year live with joy the passage of the caravan. Jhon Trejos, from Colombia, also joins the list of South American riders who will face this difficult challenge.

The long tracking shot of the PUG climbing the ridgeline of that massive dune, with the left hand front wheel just trailing the leading edge and balancing it on the throttle... poetry. Dunno who was steering... but that looked masterful.... awesome. :clap:clap I Think the Peugeot team will come to DAKAR looking to stamp their authority on the rally in what is rumoured (likely) to be their swansong. Going for three in a row.

The new 2WD X-Raid Mini is an unknown quantity as far as competition miles go (I am sure they have done heaps of test miles in Marocco?) and the re-engineered 4WD MINI All-Road - with the extra wheel travel - reduced weight - and new uprated turbo deisel ponies - will give the french something to stay in front of.

Keen to see what Giniel, Nasser and the SAfrican Toyota team bring to the party...? Everyone points to them being in the latest generation of the 4WD Hilux (like they ran in 2017)... but I have heard on the grapevine that the 2WD EVO Hilux has been out again recently at home and stretching it's legs... :hmmmmm:evil :nod

As far as the Moto's are concerned... the new KTM 450 Rally looks lighter and more manouverable than ever... this latest generation of the Yamaha, Honda, Sherco and KTM bike have brought "minimalist" way beyond what one thought practical - even just five years ago... will be great to see how the battle unfolds this year at the front.

Even the Malle Moto ("Original by MOTUL") class is going to be very competitive - not that it isn't Always - but the level of competitors this year... there are four or five guys all who can run top 30 off the bat... question will be - who has the staying power to keep the throttle under contreol and go the whole way - diong it solo, on their own - out of their little red box.

Was Lyndon's entry (to malle Moto) in (and accepted) prior to the announcement of MOTULS naming rights sponsorship of the class...? If so, case closed I'd say... he can clearly demonstrate that his entry was contingent to his main sponsor and the colour/signage is part of that deal. If that arrangement pre-dates the MOTUL deal with ASO for sponsoring the Malle Moto category, then he has a strong case (pun). If not... he might have to get out the red spray paint can come documentation time. :dunno

I do not really understand why they let it go, the historic name "Malle Moto". Where Dakar is build on. :baldy

"Malle MOTO by MOTUL" has a great ring to it...
